Lightroom: Update DNG Preview & Metadata overwrites full-size preview with medium-size preview

Upon conversion to DNG, photos have full-size preview, as they should (when full-size preview option is checked).

However, invoking Update DNG Preview & Metadata overwrites the full-size preview and replaces it with a medium-size preview - this is not what I expect, and not what I want.

I hoped and expected that the full-size preview would be updated instead.

As an indicator (not a proof) notice how the file-size of the DNG (with full-size preview initially) goes down after saving preview in Lightroom.

I assume this is a bug (or is it a "feature" that I don't understand?).

What size preview do you have set in your LR preferences? It should be following that setting.

Thanks Victoria. - that did it - under 'Import DNG Creation' options.

PS - It's not clear to expect that (I didn't import the DNG, I converted it, and there were the same set of options offered at that time, which I expected to govern).

All good once you know, but I think Adobe should consider some clarification, at a minimum:

e.g. should I also expect the compatibility option to change based on 'Import DNG Creation' setting, or will it continue to follow the option set upon initial conversion...

Yeah, I can see it's not that clear. The preferences setting affects import plus update preview & metadata. If it followed the settings used at initial conversion, there would be no way of changing the preview to a different size.

Right, I understand the rationale - perhaps just some clarity...

Say, while I've got ya - you wouldn't happen to know what icc-profile those previews are using, eh?

i seem to find that updating the XMP data does not update the DNG preview - however manually updating the DNG preview does

any way this can be made to happen automatically

In a word - no, or at least not without "extending" a plugin.
