Lightroom: Renaming folder during import confuses Lightroom

When importing photos into Lightroom, if you rename the folder into which the images are being imported, Lightroom gets confused.

I've got Lightroom set up import photos into folders named according to the capture date. When I start the import process, Lightroom will create a folder on disk with the capture date and import images into that folder.

Once the import is completed, I rename the folder by appending additional information about that day's shoot (e.g. location, subject).

Today I got ahead of myself and renamed the folder BEFORE the import was completed. Lightroom was not happy.

Here's what I expected would happen:

Lightroom renamed the folder as I requested and the images that had already been imported ended up in the renamed folder. So far so good. I expected to see the remaining images from the import operation to show up in the renamed folder.

Instead this is what happened:

1. Lightroom recreated the folder with the orignal name
2. Newly imported images started showing up in this folder
3. Lightroom seemed to think that the images which had already been imported (prior to my renaming the original folder) were missing even though they were safely stored away in the renamed folder.

To resolve the problem I could point Lightroom to the correct location for each image, or, being lazy, I just deleted both folders and reimported all the images, waiting this time for the import to complete before renaming the folder.

So this looks like a bug to me. Lightroom seems to be making assumptions about the name of the folder into which the images are to be imported, rather than using a file descriptor to the directory which would not change in the event that a silly user like me renamed the folder which Lightroom was trying to write to it.

Thanks!

I run into a similar problem

Scenario (LR 4.4 on W7x64)
=====================
My folder structure is like this

d:\pictures\raw\2013\sports\

I imported raws form my CF-Card into an newly created folder and renamed during import to d:\pictures\raw\2013\sports\2013-04-14-bikerace
This folder was created during the import and all pictures had been copied and renamed as specified into that folder. so far so good.

looking in the library modules i found my 2013-04-14-bikerace below 2013 but not below sports. I did not do a deeper investigation. I simply removed all pictures in 2013-04-14-bikerace via Lightroom and started the reimport again, this time I did not create the foleder because it was there from the previous report already.

This import was fine now.

No Idea what went wrong the first time.
Sound a bit similar to the scenario Sean is reporting.

By the way, it was the first import after updating to 4.4, I never have seen such a problem before.

This is a different scenario, and I'm not sure what went on here, but glad you had no troubles on the second go-around.

If you see more of this, create a new thread so we can look into it.
Thanks Klaus!

Thanks for the feedback Sean.
When you tell Lightroom to import, it begins the process of transferring images from the card into the Destination path you specify prior to starting LR's import.

Changing that path mid-process outside of Lightroom's "awareness" by using the OS causes the missing links and the continued import into the originally designated folder that you speak of. This is not a bug.
If you want to change the path of the folder post-import, then I recommend doing it from within the Folders pane on the left in the Library view.

Hope this helps,
Regards

Hi Peter,

Thanks for joining the thread. My apologies for not making this clearer in my bug report, but I *did* rename the folder from within the Lightroom Folders Pane. I'm pretty sensitive to the fact that LR can get confused when you move/rename files/folders around underneath it so I never do that.

So I still think it's a bug. It should be easy to replicate, but if you have problems, let me know and I'll do what I can to help. This problem manifested on LR4.4

Cheers,

Sean

Thanks for clarifying your workflow in that case Sean. My mistake for assuming OS.

Yeah, we should probably pop a warning if rename is attempted mid import, or see about tracking the name change while importing.
Thanks again,
Regards

Better yet -- why not just do the right thing and correctly handle the renaming?

That is what I meant when I wrote "or see about tracking the name change while importing".
