Why is it taking 3 seconds per file to save metadata for raw DNG files, whereas linear DNGs take only a small fraction of a second?

How are you collecting these stats? I'm curious.

One-thousand one, one-thousand two, one-thousand three, saved. (judging from progress indicator, but also confirmed via plugin...). Saving 3 files takes about 9 seconds, 5 files takes 15...

That's probably not particularly accurate nor representational. A lot can be going on before the app decides to update the UI.

Has nothing to do with the UI.

Rob, what is the exact command / menu option that you are using?

Ctrl-S or 'Metadata Menu -> Save Metadata To File'.

Is this timing normal or should I expect better?

Not only is save metadata much faster for linear DNGs, but its also much faster for proprietary raws.

How long does it take *you* to save metadata for raw DNGs?

Rob, no, this is not normal. I just did a test here with LR 3.5 and normal mosaic DNG files. I selected 20 files, updated a bunch of metadata (keywords, ratings, etc.) and then pressed "command-S" to save the metadata to all 20 files. That "save" operation took 1 second. I am not sure what is happening on your end, but it is certainly not expected behavior that saving metadata to mosaic DNGs would take longer than linear DNGs or non-DNG images.

The reason I asked about what UI option you were using was because I wanted to be sure you weren't choosing the "Update DNG Previews & Metadata" option. That option, as you probably know, will ask LR to recompute the thumbnails and embedded preview images for DNG files, and of course that will take extra time. It may take a little longer for mosaic DNGs compared to linear DNGs because of the extra early-stage raw processing that mosaic DNGs require.

Thanks Eric - I'll have to play with it and see if I can glean anything...
