Lightroom Preview Problem Finally Understood

I think I finally broke the code.

I have a little over 4,000 images in my Lightroom catalog and when I command Lightroom to render standard previews for all of them (Library -> Previews -> Render Standard Previews -> Build All), Lightroom will happily scan all my images and create previews for those that somehow don't have them. All was well until I noticed Lightroom was creating the same 206 previews over and over again. I would run the command and it would create 206 previews and then I would run the command again and it would create the same 206 again. It couldn't seem to remember them. What's up with that?

Well, after a little experimentation, I think I discovered that Lightroom can't remember a preview if the image resolution is less than the standard preview resolution. If the image is 500x500 pixels and you want a 1680 pixel preview, Lightroom will create a preview and then forget it. If the image is 2000x2000 pixels, Lightroom will remember the preview.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
