After reading all the threads about Lightroom performance issues I counted myself lucky that, while LR was not screaming along, and apart from some preview annoyances, it was not too bad. However, perhaps coincidentally, after updating to 4.4 things went to h*** in a hand basket. Even after rendering 1:1 previews the library rendering was excruciatingly slow and thumbnails were not even rendering, just staying gray. The previews in loupe mode would not totally sharpen (heavily pixelated) until I went to develop and back. No other applications seemed to be having any problems. I have lots of memory (16GB RAM, big hard disks, i7 8 core win7 64 machine). The video drivers are up-to-date.
I just happened to remember I had ignored the last few java update messages. I updated java and everything is back to normal. I gave up on reading all the performance threads so if this is old news then please ignore.

I've never heard anybody else mention a connection between java update and Lr (previews) performance, but maybe somebody will chime in now that you've brought it up ;-)
Cheers,
