Lightroom: Printing to Epson 3880 using OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion not working

It doesn''t matter whether I click on "Print One" or "Print..." - the progress bar shows up in the top left of LR (as usual) but only for about 5 to 7 seconds, then it disappears without any "progress" showing. There are no jobs in the Print Queue and the printer is not paused.

I then checked the Epson site and installed the latest drivers for 10.8 (driver version 8.64) and restarted the MacBook Pro and restarted the printer - LR still does not print - same progress bar with not progress.

BTW, when I check the print driver version in System Preferences... > Print & Scan Settings > Options & Supplies, the printer driver version shows as 6.6.

I have a different problem with my 3880 and Mountain Lion.
I can print out of Lightroom 4 and elements10 on standard paper sizes but as soon as I choose a custom size I get a series of pages warning that no changes are being made to the original setting so that I am prevented completely from using anything but standardized sizes

Correction. The same problem happens when trying to print to a custom size in other applications (although with only one dialog box instead of the zillions that Lightroom presents us with). It's an OS X 10.8 thing. :(

My problem is like luxBorealis. 10.8, iMac 27, Epson 3800. Will not print.

Downloaded the NEW Epson Printer Driver. Followed all recommended steps of removing printer from Print list, deleting library/printers/Epson folder. Restart, empty trash, install new driver, restart etc. NO GO. Calling Epson in AM. Will let you know if we're successful.

Same issue here. Just upgraded to mountain lion. The epson utility (I.e. status, levels check) works. So it's. Communicating. The print job shows up in the print queue, then simply disappears. The normal epson pop-up showing the ink levels does not come up however. Using cs6 on a fairly new MacBook pro. I have cs5 on a windows 7 box and it can print to the 3880 just fine. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the latest drivers, no go. Also tried printing from iPhoto and that does not work. So do we need to lock some apple and epson engineers in a padded room?

I'm using the HP Pro B9180 with an i7 IMac. I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few days ago and today I can't print through Lightroom 3. Same symptoms as luxBorealis. HP prints web pages fine and I suspect anything outside of the Lightroom applications. So far, I see lots of complaints but no solutions. Anxious to hear what others are discovering.

I am using LR4 with Epson 3800 (driver 9.04). on Mountain Lion, and cannot control printer options on 3800 print dialogue box when I have LR4 manage color. Most options are greyed out. it does not use the paper profile I selected in LR4, seems to select its own. The printer dialogue box as one example defaults to color - colorsync and is greyed out so I cannot change it to other option epson color control.. This also negates my ability to select ABW drivers. If I choose to let printer manage color all options on the printer dialogue box are available, but still cannot use my specific paper profile. This makes my 3800 printer useless in my workflow.

My Epson R2880 Color profiles are not working in Lightroom following my upgrade to Mountain Lion. I can select the profiles but they seemingly aren't being applied as my prints have washed, muddy colours; the printed result is the same independent of which profile I select. It also tallies with results in the past when I erroneously selected the incorrect profile for the paper in the printer. Pretty depressing that their isn't a fix from what I can tell

I have spoken to Apple, Adobe & Epson without any resolution. It seems that Lightroom controlling color mamagement does not work as I get very dark prints and color is off - whereas with Leopard they were correct. I have a work around for my 3800, nor sure about how driver works with 2880. Here is my workaround:

-in Lightroom 4 select print profile as managed by printer
- select print and in print dialogue box below pages there is a drop down, select color
-then select radio button for Colorsync
- profile option appears and select your paper profile (it may be in other profiles depending where you put them)
- go back to drop down where selected color and now select Paper handling and you can select he Destination Paper Size

I found it still printed darker so I played Print Adjustment in Lightroom Print module, I found I had to make the Brightness slider somewhere between 25 amnd 80 depending on the image.

Hope that helps till Adobe & Epson resolve the issue. BTW if prints are muddy looking you may want to clean the print nozzels

The Lightroom code hasn't changed between OS versions.

But the OS print code and printer driver code have changed between Leopard and (Mountain) Lion.

Mark, I can confirm that your work around works on the Epson R2880 with the 9.00 driver installed.

Obviously a permanent solution is eagerly awaited.

Thank you ever so much for sharing this.

Great. BTW in the Epson printer dialogue box where it says default settings or standard - you can pull that drop down box down and then save these settings as a preset with your naming convention. I should warn you not all the setting get saved but the important ones do.

OK, issue is that there is now a disconnect between LR4 and OS & Epson - who is responsible for making the changes so the customer has a working solution?

That would be Apple or Epson -- only their code changed in the new OS version.

I guess we are going to wait a long time till there is a resolution as they will say Adobe has to make the change. Looks like my workaround will become the long term solution!! Looking at common sense logic, LR4 customers expect Adobe to provide the interface to their printers, if the printer manufacturer upgrades their drivers to allow more features of their printer to be accessible then I would expect Adobe to keep up with their upgrades.

Adobe does not provide an interface to printers.
Adobe provides an interface to the OS APIs for printing.
The printer vendor writes a driver that works with the OS APIs and does the printing.

In your case, Lightroom did not change, but the printer and OS code changed -- so logically the problem is in the OS or the printer driver code (which Adobe cannot change).

Adobe does not change their code when the printer vendor changes their driver code - that's now how it works.

At some point "someone " (Apple or Adobe) made a change to their code as I can now print from LR4 and have it manage color and great results. I am current on all updates to LR and Mountain Lion - am still using european version of epson 3800 driver 9.04 and never upgraded it.

I called Epson and they walked me through a fix. (Actually took over my computer and fixed it). It works fine with LR4.

Sadly, he did it so quickly, I'm not sure I caught all the steps. I think he deleted the printer and then deleted my Epson folder as well (not positive about that step). He then downloaded the driver and added the printer. Works fine. I had done most of that before, but I think it was deleting the Epson folder that worked. Not sure if he had access to a different drive than I had tried, but maybe. The first two techs I talked to couldn't help me at all, but the last guy just logged into my computer and fixed it very quickly. I would suggest calling Epson if the above doesn't work and then hope you find someone that understands the problem. Sorry I'm not more help.

what driver was installed for the 3800 - 8.64 or 9.04? If 8.64 does the printer utility now work? Also, do you know his name, as the person I talked to yesterday was of no help

I finally got an epson support person who was helpful and worked with me to get the 8.64 driver installed. It was a disaster, the driver installed but it did not work - missing media types that are needed, dialogue box had strange behavior and descriptions - they escalated internally and could not resolve issue, they also admitted issues with 8.64 utility being unstable and for some people it crashes for others it works - they do not know why. I then took over and reinstalled the european driver version 9.04 and it installed properly and I once again had working solution. However, both versions of driver changed and I still need to use the process I described earlier to get my prints working - means having LR4 manage color is problematic. All vendors feel it is not their issue but the other vendors issue - result is customer bears the brunt of working around the issue.

After installing OSX 10.8 I could still print from the Epson 3880 but the output was awful. I first went to the Espon site and followed the instructions at the OSX 10.8 FAQ and downloaded the driver given here and a uninstall program. Used both but to no avail. Opened ticket with Epson and they gave me a new driver and install instructions. after following them I was able to print but colors look awful. Now Epson says that Adobe is the cause of the problem and they are aware of it. Today there is a new driver on the site.

I saw an update come through during the course of last week that had the Mountain Lion avatar but the text referred to Epson; I have the Epson R2880. I shall check it out this evening and report back tomorrow on whether it is back to normal.
