Lightroom: No can metadata save, unless metadata read first...

I just got rid of the last remaining metadata issues in my catalog (with the help of SQLiteroom to identify said photos).

I had a variety of little problems which I solved one-by-one, but in the very last set there appeared to be nothing wrong with the image files, but Lightroom could not save metadata (no warning or error message). It could read metadata from them however, and after reading metadata it could write (save) the metadata.

Summary:
-------------
- Some problems were real wonky file/metadata problems.
- Some weren't.
- Lightroom does not provide any information to help.
- Lightroom does not have any facility for correcting problems.
- Lightroom can sometimes correct metadata problems by reading metadata first then writing.

Suggestions:
-----------------
- Provide error message when metadata can not be saved.
- Have ability to repair RGB image files (maybe DNGs too). - Salvage as much metadata as possible, then re-write the image file from scratch.
- Ability to isolate photos with metadata issues without using a plugin.

This just happened to me again: Lr3.6 win7/64.

I had a file that I was trying to save metadata, and it worked (metadata was saved), but Lightroom still insisted it needed to be saved again.

The problem turned out to be due to the Lens Profile Digest.

After reading metadata the lens profile digest changed, then I could save metadata again.
