Lightroom: Local Adjustment Presets: Expected LR action when using "Store presets with catalog" option.

When doing some recent testing of the "Store presets with catalog" option in Lightroom Preferences, I came across a little oddity about which it would be good to get an answer from Adobe.

The basic issue is that when the option is checked, and the resulting Lightroom Settings folder is created alongside any subsequently opened catalog, the Local Adjustment Presets sub-folder is inconsistently created, i.e. sometimes the five standard presets (Dodge, Burn, etc.) are created in the sub-folder, but sometimes they are not.

Of course while it is easy enough to reconstitute the missing Local Adjustment Presets (if you know how), the inconsistency is a bit of a puzzle and I would appreciate any informed input from the Lightroom team (or anyone else that knows) as to the likely explanation.

For the record, I have 4 pre-existing catalogs, and created another 4 specifically for today's test. Then after selecting the 'Store Presets' option I opened each catalog in turn and checked for the presence of the Local Adjustment Presets. Interestingly, for my pre-existing catalogs the Local Adjustment Presets sub-folder was created empty, but for the 4 newly-created catalogs the Local Adjustment Presets sub-folder was (correctly?) populated with the five presets.

To me, it isn't a big deal....I'd just like to understand the reason behind the inconsistency so that I can better explain to others when they run into the 'missing local adjustment presets' issue.

All testing was carried out on a WIn7 64 bit system, using LR3.6 (though the same issue I think prevails on older releases).

My local adjustment presets seem to be stored here:

C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Local Adjustment Presets

Yes, that's the default location for them on a Win7/Vista system. However, when you select the "Store presets with catalog" option, Lightroom creates a Lightroom Settings folder alongside the catalog, this contains many of the various preset sub -folders and includes a Local Adjustment Presets sub-folder. From the instant that the option is selected in Preferences, Lightroom no longer looks in the default location for user presets, it only looks to the new sub-folders.

Packaged presets, such as Develop Presets, are NOT copied to the new set of sub-folders, but it would appear that Lightroom continues to source those from the bowels of the installed program files (you can delete the folder containing them from the default location so that you can't find them anywhere on the system, but they are still available to the program). One would therefore logically expect the Local Adjustment Presets (being packaged) to behave in the same way....but that's not the case. In my testing they are sometimes written into the new sub-folder within the new Lightroom Settings folder, and are thus available in Develop. But sometimes they are not written to that sub-folder and are thus not available in Develop (until you select Restore Local Adjustment Presets from the Presets Preferences Tab).

To me, there is an inconsistency in the way Lightroom handles the "Store Presets" option between packaged Develop and Local Adjustment Presets. And there is a further inconsistency in that it seems not always to copy the Local Adjustment Presets to the new sub-folder.....which in turn leads to 'missing presets' and some confusion.

I don't believe checking the box causes presets to be copied over. This isn't a bug, it's a lack of a feature or a design decision.

Well that's what I thought too, but when doing some testing of the feature (am doing a write-up for the users at Lightroom Forums) I came across the inconsistent behaviour....sometimes they're copied over, sometimes not.

I'm just hoping that the team can clarify what the expected action is in relation to Local Adjustment Presets when "Store Presets" is activated, and can then provide some insight into the reason for the rather hit or miss approach that I've encountered.

It's not a big issue, it just feels a little untidy and inconsistent.
