It seems to be an old bug but the latest download of Lightroom trial (3.6) I am still having problems with importing some Jpeg files "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo.". I have about 28 Jpeg files that can not be imported because LR thinks they are corrupt, be they aren't because other programs can read them fully.

Of course I can fix the problem, by using another program to load & save them and then LR can read them. But .... this means that I can never trust LR to do the job 100% correct and I do have to check it always.

What other apps are you using to read the images "fully"? Most apps read only part of the image data and image data, and use the built-in preview when showing the image.

Lightroom is relatively unique in that it reads the entire image data and builds its own preview.

You can try taking one of these images and removing the preview before trying it in another app to see how the app fairs rebuilding its own preview (assuming other apps know how to do this.

You can also try one of the JPEG validators out there, though complete JPEG validation is more of an art than a science. There is no util I've seen that encompasses the entire JPEG/JFIF standard, so usually it is an app like Lightroom that visits those bytes in the most comprehensive manner.

Well I am very happy that LR is so unique that it reads the entire image data to build its own preview.

As a result of that I can not import about 2% of my Jpeg files and for future imports I will actually never be 100% sure if LR will be able to import them.

Would it not be much easier that if not the entire image data can be read to make the best of like other programs also do? And then of course make an remark of that at the photo-preview.

But well never mind I am just a user.
