Lightroom: going from LR3.5 to LR4.1 best installation method?

When LR4 was released there were very serious problems with point curve adjustments and performance. For this reason I have not moved from my LR3.5 and I have had an unopened LR4.0 shrink-wrapped upgrade box sitting on my desk for six months.

Now that we have 4.1 released, I'm willing to try it. The question is: how? Could I download 4.1 and install it using the serial number on the shrink-wrapped box? Or, must I install from the 4.0 box, then let it upgrade automatically to 4.1? If the latter, can I prevent it from accessing my catalogs until it has upgraded itself to 4.1? Can I do this but still avoid losing all my templates, export presets etc.?

You can install the 4.1 build without installing 4.0. The serial number from your 4.0 box will work with 4.1.
