Lightroom doesn't recognize metadata updates

In Lightroom 5.0 I am seeing the following behavior.

I go to a folder of images in Lightroom. I then change the metadata in the files using an external program (I use exiftool to set the "title" field of the images). I then right click on the folder and choose "Synchronize Folder..." and choose "Scan for Metadata Updates". What I find after the scan for metadata updates is completed

1) the icon showing that the file metadata changed is still present (three lines + up arrow icon)

2) the Library Filter by metadata status shows all files Up to date

3) the new value for the title field does show correctly in the Metadata panel (IPTC or Location values) on the right side of Lightroom.

4) The cell extra value (which is set to show the title) does not show the correct title value in Grid view

1) and 4) are bugs, 2) and 3) are correct

If I quit Lightroom and relaunch, bugs 1) and 4) are fixed
