Lightroom: Ability to create catalog/photo collection archives

I'd like to archive several large Lightroom photo collections. I want the archive to include the original RAW photos (of course!) and all derivative images and catalog information (e.g., virtual copies, develop module adjustments, etc). It should be possible but not necessary to separate an archived collection from the images registered with Lightroom, and it should be possible to attach or reattach an archive to Lightroom. An archive NOT separated from the Lightroom database should be updatable. An option to create archives in sections that will fit on standard DVDs would be appreciated.

Presently you can accomplish part-1 simply by exporting a catalog containing a subset of photos (then delete the photos from present catalog if desired) - so it seems you're asking for something that already exists - or did I miss something?

You can't have more than one catalog open at a time though... have you considered making this a separate FR/Idea?

PS - Why not archive to hard disk instead of DVD?

Thanks for info, Rob. As a relatively new Lightroom user, I didn't know about exporting as a catalog. I just tried the procedure and it does just what I'd hoped for.

I do, in fact, back up to hard drives -- three of them, in fact. The idea of archiving to DVD is so that I can send a catalog of images to a friend who also uses Lightroom.

It would be easy to make a plugin to export a catalog constrained by disk size, but I don't know of any presently in existence. (plugin would simply select the photos - you'd have to do the catalog export then). If you have any programming knowledge you could modify my "DistributeEvenly" plugin to do it.
