Lightroom: Allow Collapsing of the Currently Selected Collection

It is not currently possible to collapse the currently selected folder or collection. There are many times when I want to do so in order to have an uncluttered view of the folder or collections panels. I shouldn't have to see the entire folder hierarchy if I don't want it.

Have you tried Alt-clicking / Opt-clicking on the disclosure triangle, to collapse all of the subfolders? How is this request different?

I just went through this again to ensure that I had it right, and it actually only happens in collections. and alt-clicking doesn't make a difference. The currently selected collection cannot be collapsed.

I don't seem to be able to edit my original post, so if someone could, that would be great.

Ok, I can edit the post title to say collections instead of folders, no problem. So would the Folders alt-click behavior replicated onto Collections work for you?

OK, more digging, and now I think that this is just a bug in collection sets. It has annoyed me for a long time and I assumed that it happened for any Folder, Collection, or Collection set, but it turns out to be much more specific than that.

In some cases, if you have a Collection Set that contains other Collection Sets, then the parent Set cannot be collapsed. When you click (or alt-click) on the set, they temporarily collapse and then immediately expand again. Sometimes the expansion is multiple layers, at other times it is only expanded to the first sub-collection-set.

It doesn't seem to matter if the parent or one of the children is initially selected. It doesn't seem to matter if the parent contains other collections or images. It doesn't seem to matter how many layers of children their are. But it only happens if the parent collection contains other sets.

It's particularly crazy because it only happens to some (most in my case) collection sets, but not to all of them. Can anyone else reproduce this behavior?

I've got John Beardsworth's Workflow collection on my PC, it contains a mixture of Collections, Collections Sets, Collection Sets within Collection Sets, Smart Collections within Collections Sets....and the whole lot can be collapsed/expanded using Alt-Click, and at any level in the hierarchy.

So no, can't replicate the problem, sorry.

Mmmmm, that does sound like a bug, or a problem in that catalog at least.

Are you Mac or PC Sean? I still can't replicate it on Mac 10.6. If you try a clean catalog, can you replicate the problem?

If not, it would interesting to see if exporting everything to a new catalog solves it for you using Export as Catalog. If that solves it, and you can't reproduce it again, then that might be the easiest solution in this case. Do you have any Publish Collections? They wouldn't get carried over automatically with an Export as Catalog, but there is a plug-in that can do so.
