Lightroom: Smart Previews are great - but I want to use them also when raw is available

I hope it is possible to add a special mode where LR takes the smartpreview instead of the RAW, even if the RAW is available. This would speed things up a lot.

If photos are on external drive and you don't need it online for other things, just unplug it. Otherwise, consider using the

'Take Photos Offline'

and

'Put Photos Back Online'

features of

Preview Exporter (plugin by me, free).

Hi Rob,

thanks for the plugin but I really think this is a small Feature which is missing to fully exploit the potential of smart previews. Implementation should be possible in line of code :-)

Fair enough Julian, but I recommend documenting the differences you notice when using smart preview versus online image.

The difference is that I can update simple editing tasks much faster on a smart preview than with my 36MP RAW.

Especially with something like cropping it is much faster. I often need to crop a lot of images since I use the camera to digitize slides and other documents.

Thanks Julian. Do you notice a speed difference doing all editing tasks? Are there any others besides cropping that are especially notable?

Sorry if it seems like I'm pushing, but I think this info might help to determine whether what you are seeing is normal, and in any case what kind of impact we are talking about - numeric estimates would be good, even if rough.
