when i try to import photos into lightroom 5 the photo numbers appear in the grid but the boxes are gray. The photos will import into iPhoto and I was able to copy them onto a folder on my desktop. However, LR doesn't recognize them. When I go through the import steps it says unable to locate photos.

Gray boxes on the Import grid usually mean that LR cannot use the display profile that is assigned to your monitor so it cannot display them in a color-managed way that it wants to.

The you can see the thumbnails on the Import grid, but later in LR Library, there are gray boxes, that can also be the display profile or it can be that your preview cache is corrupted.

If you mean that the Import grid has gray boxes before you import, then try recalibrating your display as described, here:

Steve-
I did the recalibrating and any photos that I try to import just show the file number with a check mark in the gray grid.

I had previously imported a SD card without any problems. When I tried to import the second card is when the gray grid appeared.

I calibrated a second time and same problem.

If you actually import a photo--maybe just one as a test, even though it shows gray, then immediately export it to JPG, does the JPG look ok or not?

I tried to import just one photo but the bar just sits there and doesn't move (copy and import photos bar)

Can you upload one of these raw files to www.dropbox.com and post a public download link to it here? Others can test it on their system and see if it is corrupted or is otherwise not importable.

I've added a folder to dropbox. How do I post as a public link?

There should be a way to right-click on the photo or folder on DropBox that will give a Copy Public Link command, and after clicking on that, then paste the link you've just copied into a message, here.
