I've seen it happen 3 times now. Here's an overview:

1) I'm working in Adobe Lightroom 5.4 (and it happened in previous LR5.x releases too).
2) An update arrives from Adobe
3) The cursor changes to a spinning ball and there it remains until a hard reboot.
4) After the reboot the LR catalog that was open is corrupted as are the previews. I have to delete all of the previews and restore a backup before I can use that catalog again.

Also, this is the slowest version of Lightroom yet. It is nearly unusable. LR4 had its problems too, but seriously, LR5 is a major disappointment. Please implement some QC procedures (i.e. 6 Sigma or something). LR5 is costing me a lot of time and money, and although I will probably re-install LR4 and go back to using it, I'm seriously considering dropping Adobe products/
