Lightroom 5.3: When is preference file written? (.agprefs)

Once upon a time, I was pretty-sure preferences were only being saved upon exit. Now, it seems they are being saved pretty-darn-quick after they are changed.

Was my previous conclusion incorrect, or has there been a "recent" change so prefs are saved promptly, instead of being deferred until exit?

Well, I just opened LR5.3 without doing anything to it, and looking at Resource Monitor, it was writing to the .agprefs file within a couple of minutes!

Thanks for confirming Bob.

I discovered this recently when working on v2 of Pretend (plugin), which now does what you wanted v1 to do!

(remove *all* preferences and/or catalog metadata for *any* plugin).

Preferences used to only be saved upon exit - I wonder when this behavioral change occurred (?)

I also wonder if it's responsible for more problematic preference files - the other thing which made me think to check this is my preference file was corrupted upon a power failure.

Perhaps Adobe should consider adding some protection for the (critical and now) constantly re-written preference file.

PS - The problem with my Undo feature (it's broken: always says "Undo Select", whatever that means - doesn't "undo" anything that I can tell) is tied to preferences - not sure how exactly yet, but I'm gonna figure it out or die trying.

Cheers,
Rob
