Lightroom 5.3: Using 'Publish to Hard Drive' on a cropped image doesn't resize as per settings: cropped size is published incorrectly

For example, an image with original dimensions 4272x2848 and cropped to 3353x2235 (aspect ratio preserved) then published to hard drive using settings of 'Long Edge: 2400px' is published at the cropped size, i.e. 3353px wide. If the image is Exported using the same settings, the resize to 2400x1600 is performed properly.

The only workaround I've been able to find is to publish, then reselect everything and export it all with the same settings used in the publish, overwriting all the published files of course.

It's likely that in the Publish Service settings you have "Don't Enlarge" checked, whereas with the normal Export settings you probably have "Don't Enlarge" UNchecked.

There's a bug in the LR 5.3 export service (Publish is just another form of Export) which can cause any "Resize" options to be ignored. This only happens when "Don't Enlarge" is checked. See this thread for further details:

I assume Adobe will fix these bugs come Lr5.4, until then there's Exportant:

Fix is via "Miscellaneous: Prevent long dimensions".

@Jim: yes, you're right about the don't enlarge checkbox - I'd tried to be diligent with the export and publish settings to make them the same but had missed that one.

As it happens, for my case the source photos are almost always larger anyway so un-checking that box is a perfectly good workaround. Thank you.

@Rob: that looks like a really capable plugin, but with the above workaround I'm happy with my publishing workflow for now. From you site it wasn't clear to me how your plugin would work with publish services... To me, as the uninformed, publish services and exports are different things, so if your plugin works well for both you might like to consider making its capabilities clearer in that respect.

Ben,

Indeed, if you don't need the "Don't Enlarge" feature, simply turning it off is a good way to keep this bug from biting.

If you DO need the "Don't Enlarge" feature, then you have to pre-filter your photos into 2 groups: those that will be reduced, and those that would be enlarged, then export separately with different settings (resizing and no-resizing respectively). That, or just use Exportant - set the requisite option and forget about it.

PS - I added a big note about publish services support to the top of the doc - thanks.
