Lightroom 5.3 - secondary display on Retina MacBook Pro stops working after editing file in external editor

I have a problem with Lightroom 5.3 on my Retina MacBook Pro when using a secondary monitor. I typically have the Retina display as my primary display, and use a 24" 1920x1200 monitor as my secondary display. I use Shift-E to send the Loupe display to the secondary display. I perform my adjustments on the Retina display and I can see them reflected on the secondary display.

However, when I edit a Lightroom file in an external application (e.g. Photoshop) and save it back to Lightroom, Lightroom appears to get confused and the secondary display stop working. The secondary display simply shows the Mac desktop, and Lightroom now thinks that the Retina display is also the secondary display, and shows a zoomed portion of the Loupe. If I use Shift-E to switch off the secondary display then the Retina display now shows my usual Develop window, but toggling Shift-E does not restore the secondary display. The only way to fix it appears to be quitting and restarting Lightroom. This is an issue in my workflow when (for example) editing files in Photoshop or in the Nik Collection.

Has anyone else seen this problem?
