Lightroom 5.3 is damaging my RAW files between 'Backup' & shutdown, and then the next day when I open LR again.
"The file appears to be unsupported or damaged." is appearing on sporadic files that were perfect the day before.
I'm a Lightroom user since V1.0, running LR 5.3 on my Mac OS X 10.7.5.
Help, PLEASE!!!

It's possible (probable even) that Lightroom is showing you damage that it did not do. Check disk and ram immediately, since you may have a system problem that will destroy more files until you catch it.

I must admit that I am amazed how often this problem shows up with CR2's versus other formats. Somebody (Allan.. I think) had a theory about why, but I don't remember it.

Thanks Rob. My disk and ram have been checked and re-checked now with no problems found.

I had a new 1TB SSD installed a month ago (professionally), and everything was checked at that time. We also upgraded to Mavericks at the same time, and suddenly everything started to become corrupted after import into LR.

So we backed down to Mountail Lion, but had similar issues, though not as many.

So we then wiped the SSD clean, and started over w/ Lion and re-installed everything. After 2 weeks on no issues, today the "unsupported or damaged" warning has suddenly returned.

Sorry Joe - dunno what to say: usually this type of problem is a hardware/system problem. If due to bug in Lightroom, nobody has been able to prove it yet.

One thing to consider:
Make your CR2's read-only - deny all permissions except reading.

If they still get corrupted, then it's definitely not due to a bug in Lightroom.

Cheers,
Rob

Thanks Rob I can try that! But because it only happens sporadically (so far) among the 200k images I have on my Drobo (5 3TB archive drives), and because I do need to write to these files to process them (correct?), is it still possible to try this?
Thanks!

Yes, it is still possible to try it - there is no need to write raw files to process them - all edits are metadata in the catalog.

In fact, Lightroom *doesn't* write to them (or shouldn't), which is why it's unlikely a Lightroom bug. I mean, it'll write to DNGs to update preview and/or xmp metadata, but yours are CR2, so never written during normal use.
