Lightroom 4: Unable to Upgrade Catalog

I am using Lr3 without any problems. As part of my Creative Cloud membership I have downloaded/installed the newly released Lr4. When running Lr4 the ‘Lightroom Catalog Upgrade’ window appears ‘Please upgrade the catalog file “Lightroom 3 Catalog” for use with Lightroom 4’ etc. When clicking on ‘Upgrade’ a progress window is shown but after a while this message appears:

‘Unable to Upgrade Catalog: Lightroom encountered problems when trying to update the format of the catalog file and cannot use this catalog in this version of Lightroom.’

The Lr3 catalog had been optimised in advance of the upgrade. Clicking on ‘See Adobe TechNote’ doesn’t give any helpful advice for this problem.

Here are my system details:

Windows 7 Business Edition, 64-bit, Service Pack 1
Lightroom version 3.6 [795620]
Lightroom version 4.1 [829322]
Lr3 catalog file: 639MB with 69,674 photographs and some video files (Canon 5DII and iPhone 4S).

How can I update the catalog file to the Lr4 format? The catalog file can be uploaded to my Creative Cloud space if required.

So this was an LR3 catalog that's been working fine in LR3?

Most of Adobe are shut for the next week, but if you want to drop me your LR3 catalog, I'll see if I can get it to upgrade here. You could drop it on my server (www.vbftp.net, username webupload, password 123) if that works for you. If it works, you'd need to rebuild previews, but we can hope...

Have you ever used any plugins in LR3? There may be some plugin data left that LR4 does not like.
