Lightroom: LR 4 does not complete import

Lightroom 4: When I import a folder of more than 50 images, Lightroom does not complete the import. The status bar in the extreme upper left corner goes to the end, but does not clear. I have to quit LR, restart and import the rest of the folder. Depending on the size of the folder this might take several tries.

I want to add: If I try to quit LR, I get an error message that process is underway. I can kill the import process to quit, but the Import button in the lower left is greyed-out. When I relaunch, only about 25 or 30 files will be imported at a time.

Yes, I'm using 4.1. Another detail I should add: I'm trying to add photos to an existing catalog. I gave up trying to add the photos, so I created a new LR document and imported the whole folder at once. The new catalog seems to be working properly, now. However, there will be an occasion when I will be importing additional images into it. I doubt I will be able to replicate the problem as there will be only a few at a time. Oh, and I'm running MacOS Lion.
