Lightroom 4 book module is not consistant in saving the the books. If you copy and past a page template they seem to be tided together some how. even after you add different photos and close out light room, and go back to it later... be ware your work might get wiped out because. I am not sure what is causing the the glitch but i will not trust the book module untill some update has been done about its glitchyness. The sad thing is the book module is one of the main reasons i upgraded to 4.

This is a problem I saw in 'books' also.

I think it fair to say this module is not functioning as it's supposed to.

I was tired when I typed this problem up last night can't believe the typos. But the problem I am having with LR4 is that the Books Module is that when you copy and paste a template from a previous page they seem to be linked somehow. If you created a page and put in pictures and modify the template then go and copy the template for another page and put in new pictures, then close LR4 or go another sections with LR4 and go back to "books" the pages created from the modified template will lose the pictures and be replaced with the pictures from the first template you used. It is like the database is linking the templates that are copied back to the original for both the modifications and the photos used. So beware your work may be lost.

I just posted to the LR4 forum the same problem. After saving my book, I exited LR4 got back in and then went to my saved book. The book came up in the book module, I went to develop to edit one of the book's pictures. Upon my return, the book screen was back to the initial empty template. The film strip still had my pictures used in the book with the mark above the pictures actually used. I agree this is an issue. Is there a way to restore the book?

The book module has been pretty stable since I been creating pages without copying the format from one page to another. The way I been getting around having to search for the same page template over and over is I click on the page template I used previously and want to use again then click in the work area and click new page and Lightroom selects the template I clicked on and creates the new page with that template. This is done with no ties back to the previous page and I been doing it for about 80 pages now and so far it has worked.

Is Adobe responding to any of these posts? I too lost two books after several weeks of working and I just announcement yesterday that one of the books would be available next week via Blurb.

I was typing in text from one book to another on the book jacket flaps. Went back to my first book and it was reset to the default template - NO BOOK! I switched over to the second book and the same thing. NO BOOK - just a default blank cover and a blank page... yes all my images are still in the film strip. Yes my books are listed under collections. Yes I saw undo and red steps though the layout only showed the default template as if it was a new book using LR's default for starts.

This is more than a serious bug, Adobe and Blurb. This eliminates my trust in LR4 as a professional tool for book making. This need to be made public before others buy the program and use the book module for professional projects.

Now I have to recreate these books using InDesign which has been flawless with my last couple books with Blurb. So disappointed. IF ANYONE HAS HEARD OF A WAY TO RESTORE A BOOK after it has disappeared... please tell me? Please?

Adobe has contacted me to fix the bug, I sent a video of the problem. I think that is the fix in the 4.1 release.

Joshua, is there anyway of reclaiming the work (that appears to be lost in the missing book layout)... I mean, is it a visual glitch or is the actual book layout GONE form the library? I would love it if there was a recovery. I was just about to call Adobe Tech support or blast the BEWARE signal on Twitter. To say I am ticked off about this is an understatement.

I do not think there is a way to recover the lost books. I think it was a relationship error in the data base (or that is what is appears to have been). Especially if you did the copy and past of page layouts. But then again i never lost pages or the entire book, i just lost the images in the pages i copied and pasted and the new pages i pasted the lay out from defaulted back to the images from the orginal page. But adobe seems to be aware of the problems associated with the book module.

It would be nice for them to post a reply on this form to let us know what exactly they are working on.

I agree with you Joshua! Thanks for letting me know Adobe is aware of this. I plan on calling tech support on Monday morning.

Hate to be the jerk here but I just posted a consumer alert on Face Book. LR4 shouldn't have been released for use. That is what BETA testing is for. I remember when I bought my Canon 5D mkII and Adobe did not release a CRW raw update for camera raw for that camera for CS4. When I called to ask them when they would release it, they said they would not because the 5DmkII was "new technology" (the logic from tech support - despite newer profiles being released for CS4) and I was told I needed to upgrade to CS5 if I wanted to develop my 5D2 raw files. I did and of course CS5 runs on Intel based Macs - I was running a G5 at the time. So my 5DmkII cost me extra in buying a new Intel Mac Pro and an upgrade to CS5 right around the time my clients started asking why they had to pay so much for commercial work when their "nephew has a digital camera." - I would laugh if it didn't hurt so much. All joking aside - I only need the professional stuff I buy to work without failure. This is a serious failure in LR4 - and the BOOK module was the one reason I upgraded to LR4 thinking it would be a faster solution than InDesign or BlurbSmart.

Thanks for hearing my rant. Sorry about the attitude. It just has me frustrated and my dealings with Adobe have been less than consumer conscious for a company as large as they are.

Joshua - and to all else who may read this thread,
I located an older .lrct file for LR4 dated March 17 and launched it into LR4.

My books were there as of the work done up to March 17.

I have already started the set-up of my books in InDesign CS5 and will rebuild them there for output to Blurb. At this point i do not trust LR4 and won't until I hear that this specific bug has been addressed and fixed.

Thanks for posting the problem.

Ha ha ha - I too have the 5D mkIII lined up but have waited on the purchase until I hear that there are no bugs (like the 1D mkIII continuous AF recall) and also to find out if I will have to update to CS 5.5 or 6 in order to process the 5D mkIII raw files. Same for the 1Dx as I heard there is nothing out at this time to support the 1Dx raw files but for the Canon software (besides, for that I will be selling my other three 1 series bodies and so I must be sure hardware and software talk to each other and don't fail me on the way to production). A buyer for my 5D2 is helping my pocket book on the 3 purchase. But it just doesn't seem simple these days and to assume everything will work has been a costly mistake for me in the past. Have you tried a 5DmkIII yet? It is quite impressive and a very new beast comparative to the 2. Well, off subject here. Let's just see if Adobe will think of its customers before its stock holders. ;) Thanks again for stating the issue. I see there are an awful lot of pages of complaints in the Lightroom forums... hopefully Adobe can fix most of these with an update.

Really wish I had read this thread sooner. I just lost a week of work when a book I was working on (50+ pages) suddenly reset to the default empty book template. And I had just finished the final review before uploading to Blurb.

This error can be reproduced with ease. Simply create a sample book with an image on the cover, then do the following:

- Save book and give it a name so it appears in the Collections as a book.
- Duplicate the book in Collections to create a second book.
- Delete the second book.
- LR4 will destroy your original book and leave you with the default template. There does not seem to be any way to find the book or undo to restore it.

Sorry to those that have lost their work, thankfully we're making progress here.

Sharad, the product manager for Lightroom, has just posted a new blog entry on this book issue. It includes specifics on what can cause it and how to avoid it. The team has tracked down a reproducible set of steps that can be used to nail down a fix in a future update to Lightroom 4.
