Have you updated Lightroom4 and 5 to the most recent update? When does it crash - when you open Lightroom? What happens - is there an error message?
Try resetting preferences - there are more great troubleshooting suggestions here:

Tina, thanks for the reply, it is updated, there is no x86 version,it stops working as soon as you open the develop mode; it says "adobe photoshop lightroom 64 bit has stopped working a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly" I will try safe mode next. thanks again, darrel

That means there's something loading into the OS when it opens that is conflicting with Lightroom. Now you need to figure out what's conflicting. When you're in Windows Startup Settings, you can turn everything off, then turn on each setting one at a time, run Lightroom, and see if it works. If it does, it's probably not that setting. If it doesn't - that's probably the setting that's conflicting. (There could be more than one conflicting - less likely, but possible.) Method #2 is to turn half of them on, test, if that works, it's unlikely the conflicting setting is among the group turned on. Try the other half, retest, etc., etc. Hope this helps!
