Lightroom 4 & 4.1 hang at startup.

When I launch LR4, it hangs when loading the film strip and is unrecoverable. I haven't been able to determine the intervals at which this happens - sometimes days, sometimes weeks. Repairing the installation of 4 and 4.1, restarting the program, and rebooting the system do not help. My temporary work around is to locate the preference file in user/appdata/roaming/Lightroom/preferences and delete it. This is a huge inconvenience, and I often lose hours of editing if the catalog did not back up last time I started.

SYSTEM: Windows 7, Intel i5, 4gb RAM, integrated graphics, full version of Lightroom 3, upgrade to Lightroom 4, CS5.

Why do you think you lose the catalog? If you delete your prefs file and Lightroom forgets the catalog, the catalog is still there on your hard drive and you can locate and open it.

Try to check your hard drive for errors.

I really don't know why - possibly because I'm on an upgrade version? It reverts to the last catalog that I used when I last used LR3.6. I have started using a new catalog every 5th import, and that seems to have solved things for now.
