Lightroom 4.1 Geotagging: Interoperability Issue/Missing Exif Data

Hi,

I have been using Picasa for tagging and Picasa/Google Earth for geo-tagging for quite some time now. Now with LR 4 I thought I'd give it a shot for these tasks, too.

I found a problem with geotagging however: image jpeg files which are geotagged with LR 4 are not recognized as having geotags inside Picasa. The other direction works well. I investigated the issue with ExifTool GUI, and I think I found the reason: LR doesn't include the Exif GPS keyword "GPSAltitudeRef". When I manually add this with ExifTool (ExifTool Direct Option in the GUI) as -Exif:GPSAltitudeRef="Above Sea Level", Picasa now recognizes the geotag, too. All Picase/GE geotags have it this way.

I'd like to request Adobe to include this in an upcoming LR bugfix update, so that interoperability between Picasa and Lightroow is improved. I still need Picasa as a front end to my web albums.

Thanks and regards
Peter

Hi Peter,

I am not able to reproduce this problem. Can you answer a few questions for me?

1. What operating system are you using?
2. What version of Picasa are you using?
3. Do you still experience the problem in Lightroom 4.3?
4. After you geotag the photo in Lightroom, how exactly are you writing the metadata to the file? Are you exporting a file from Lightroom (including location metadata) and looking at that exported file in Picasa? Or are you writing the metadata to the original file in Lightroom? And if the latter, are you doing that via the "Automatically write changes into XMP" catalog setting, or are you doing it manually via the "Save Metadata to Files" command?
5. And, just to confirm, you're talking about JPEG files, correct?

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben,

Sorry for not answering this any earlier. I had other priorities the last weeks...

The issue is solved for me with Picasa 3.9. It now seems to recognize the geotags written by LR correctly even without the GPSAltitudeRef keyword.

Just for the record...
1. Win7 Professional 64bit
2. Picasa 3.8 showed the behaviour I described. 3.9 is fine
3. LR 4.3 continues to not write the GPSAltitudeRef keyword, but this is no problem any more for me.
4. I use "Save Metadata to Files" after adding geotags to my JPG files (developed from my camera's .CR2 raw files)
5. yes

Thanks and regards
Peter
