Lightroom 4.1: Assigning metadata presets via context menu does not work

Assigning metadata presets via context menu does not work (simply does nothing) if the target images were selected while the metadata panel was collapsed, no image was selected before and the metadata panel was not expanded again in the meantime.

To reproduce:
1. Create a metadata preset (e.g. with rating to quickly see its effect)
2. Enter grid view
3. Deselect all images (!)
4. Collapse the metadata panel (!)
5. Select one or more images
6. Context menu - Metadata Presets - Choose the preset: Nothing happens.

Note:
a. Affects context menu in grid, filmstrip and other view (loupe etc.).
b. Affects context menu even when switching to develop module
c. If multiple images are selected, LR does not even ask "apply to active or selected?"

This state is corrected by expanding the metadata panel - after that, everything works correctly (even if the panel is closed, provided that some images stay selected as it seems).

LR 4.1 64 bit, Win7.

P.S. Yes, I know, this is another "1000 monkeys bug". Pure coincidence that I discovered it...

Strange... Then there must be another prerequisite, some circumstance or setting that is different in my case.

And it's only a minor problem. Normally, one would assign metadata presets via the metadata panel anyway.
