Lightroom: HTML Gallery preview - 'Where's it gone?'

Lightroom 3 HTML web Gallery preview now appears as a solid coloured screen in the main window ( dependent on HTML template selected from the Template Browser). Can see HTML selection preview in the left hand 'Preview' box but cannot load images into an HTML gallery or even preview the selected gallery in the main window, let alone make any adjustments? I have successfully produced and uploaded galleries using this feature in the past, this has only just become an issue???????? Flash Galleries load and preview correctly. Is this a bug, a corrupt file or have I lost the plot?

Hi Victoria. I'm using Windows Vista Business on a 64 bit OS. Lightroom 3 is 64 bit 3.4.1

Thanks Terry. The bad news is, I've just booted up a Windows machine, and I can't replicate it so far, so until someone else comes along with a better idea, we could do some basic troubleshooting.

Couple of things to try:

1. If you press the Preview in Browser button bottom left, can you preview the gallery that way?

2. If you try to export the HTML gallery that you can't see (imagine it!!!), does it create a gallery and can you view that gallery correctly in a web browser?

If the answer to either is no, I'd be thinking along the lines of a corrupted web template, and reinstalling LR would be the easiest fix for that.

3. Can you view in your normal web browser, web galleries that you created previously?

If not, I'd be wondering about an OS browser problem.

And one other often easy fix - trash the preferences file - perhaps even the first to try. On Windows, it’s a hidden file by default. The easiest way to find it is to go to Lightroom’s Preferences dialog > Presets tab and press the ‘Show Lightroom Presets Folder...’ button. Once you’ve found that folder, close Lightroom. In that folder will be a Lightroom 3 Preferences.agprefs file— move it to another folder or delete it, and then restart Lightroom. It doesn't affect your images or image settings, although it'll lose things like View Options and FTP server details, which is why I suggest moving it rather than deleting, so you can put it back if it doesn't solve it.

Hi Victoria, sorry for the delayed response. In answer to question 1/ - no! For some reason my browser is telling me that it is running 'scripts or ActiveX'. When I press 'allow' the page still does not appear. In answer to question 2/ -no and no! I've just tried to view a previous on-line gallery and surprisingly it only shows my logo??? I haven't tried this until you suggested it. It does seem as if the problem lies with the browser? I've just tried your final option and that didn't resolve it either. It looks as if it's a browser problem doesn't it? Any ideas how to resolve that? I'm a bit lost on this one.

Well that's good to know Terry, and yes, if we can solve it in the browser, we should solve it in LR too. Which Internet Explorer are you running?

Hi. I am running Internet Explorer 9 version 9.0.8112.16421 - version 9.0.2. Does that help?

I'm hoping it helps one of the Windows guys. ;-) I've been primarily Mac for quite some years, so Microsoft have changed quite a lot of things in that time!!

If I were sat there, I'd try resetting the security settings to default http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wi....

That said, I can't replicate the problem at the moment, so I'm shooting in the dark.

Other question - got a firewall running? I'm wondering if there could be a setting there that's causing problems.

(And any Windows guys, please feel free to jump in!!!!)

Hi Victoria. I have the standard Windows Firewall turned on, so everything is pretty standard.

Is it worth me trying a re-install? I'm a bit nervous about losing my presets etc. but if it resolves the issue...any thoughts? What is the best way to achieve this as I don't want to have to spend ages re-configuring settings and locating libraries. Sounds like a nightmare... : ( really appreciate your time. Thank you.

I wish I knew Terry! Gut feeling, reinstalling won't help if it's the browser, as LR's using the browser to show your preview.

Question - can you view this test gallery? http://www.lightroomqueen.com/test/in...

If not, it's definitely your browser, and whatever you do in LR won't help, so I'd more likely try resetting or reinstalling IE9 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/in...

A quick test to tell you whether it is Lightroom or IE would be to install a different browser and set it as the system default browser.

I tend to use Google's Chrome Browser for testing. Install it. Make it default and then test your LR galleries both in the LR Web Module and online and see if they display correctly. If they do, then the problem is IE. If they are wonky with Chrome as default, then the problem is likely with the LR preferences file.

Test another browser and let us know what you find.

...ok. Reset IE using the link. The fix installed perfectly but it has not affected the Lightroom issue. It looks as if I need to re-install LR. Is this a straight forward remove and reload procedure?...or are there dangers? Thanks for your help.

Terry, were you able to see the test gallery in the link I posted on my own site?

If you want to try uninstalling/reinstalling LR, backup your catalog, and go to preferences > Show presets folder and back up that entire Lightroom folder it takes you to, just in case, but it should be a straightforward uninstall/reinstall?

Hi. I've done a complete reinstall and updated to 3.4.1 and I still cannot view the HTML galleries in the main window. I can see the HTML thumbnail in the preview pane. The Flash versions are fine?????. Any ideas. Am I doing something wrong? Is it a user error.....I am not as smart as you guys! : (

Hi Rikk. I've just set Google Chrome as the default browser. I can now see the HTML template when I press 'Preview in Browser', but I still cannot see the HTML template in the main LR window?

Terry, can you view this gallery in IE? http://www.lightroomqueen.com/test/in...

If you can't, it confirms that it's a problem with IE.

LR is using IE as a plug-in, so IE needs fixing so you can see the HTML template in the main LR window.

Hi Victoria. Yes I can view the test gallery ok. I have done a complete reinstall of both LR and IE and updated both. I took Rikk's advice and am now using Google Chrome as the default browser. I have just put together an HTML gallery for a client using the browser as the viewer. I could not see the gallery in the main LR window? Have I just got one of the fundamental settings wrong, maybe I've clicked on something I shouldn't have?

I don't think LR does use the version of IE that you install, so the fact you can see the test gallery in IE isn't really relevant. Instead I believe it has a built-in older version of IE code in a dll.

Try moving your preference file and restarting LR. Try Web with a different selection of images and choose your gallery from the built-in templates.

I think it's IE7 that's in there, but this shouldn't be causing the problem as the HTML galleries are pretty old school.

This is the folder in Windows 7. I think it's the same with Vista:

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences

Make sure LR is closed when you remove this file. Afterwards, just put it back in the same place, overwriting the one that LR3 creates when you do the test.

Just to clarify Johns comment, the local guide for preferences is here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/843/cpsid_84... also if removing the preferences does solve the issue, don't put the old ones back, if it doesn't then you can replace the old.
