Lightroom 3.4/3.6 not printing; print previews are blank.

The photo preview window has started appearing blank (only the 'grid' lines show up, the rest is white). I could live with that, but whatever problem is affecting the preview is also affecting the print itself as no photos actually print - the blank paper just spools straight through the printer with no ink (or attempt to mark) the paper occuring.

I can still print the photos fine if I expect as jpeg and use any other app to print, so it's not the printer, ink levels, paper or network - I only get the problem when trying to print single photos in light room. It has worked previously, but something happened and I can't figured out what changed to know what to restore. I've tried changing units back/from mm to inches , adjusting borders, applying new paper types/gloss/matt etc. The problem started with 3.4 but I just updated to 3.6 and get the same problem.

Anyone have suggestions on how to fix this? [ I've also tried different printers and even a pdfcreator print target but they all come out blank.

Thanks
Ian

I don't have any specific knowledge of this issue but can think of a few general things:
**Try a different photo-layout preset if you haven't.
**Optimize your catalog.
**Rename your LR prefs file after exiting LR, then start up LR, again, and see if printing works.

Your LR prefs file Lightroom 3 Preferences.agprefs may be in:

C:\Users\-username-\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply and great ideas.

Alas, I tried all three options with no success. :(

- new photo layout changed the grid lines but still no preview/print
- optimize catalog tells me it's already optimised ( I optimise/backup on every exit)
- Renaming the LR prefs file walked me through the 'intro' to the panels again , but print preview is still blank / no printing.

(Curiously, the latter also switched Lightroom to an old catalog on a different drive initially, but still no previews. I opened the actual catalog and same.

:(

How odd.

Have you switched around the color-management from LR to Printer to LR and switched what color-profiles each is using, like sRGB, AdobeRGB, etc?

Try updating your video drivers in case the video card is being used to render things for printing.

Check your display's color-profile and try it using

Is one of your hard-drives having errors or almost full and LR is having issues but not reporting them? Run a chkdsk or scandisk or whatever it is called nowadays on each of your HDs. Have permissions changed recently on any of your hard-drives?

Try making another user, preferably an Administrator, and log in as them, then see if things work.

Hi Steve,

It took a while to follow up to this; fwiw, I tried your tips and it made no difference - I still have the problem.

I finally got around to trying LR4; built an entirely new machine using Win7 instead of WinXP. The only things in common are a: the canon printer / drivers (Pixma MG8120B and MF4270 printers) and b: the catalog which I imported from the 3.6 version on my old machine.

I see I'm not alone - someone else reported the problem when they upgrade their Mac OS to Lion too. (no fix mentioned).

The only thing I can think of is that the RGB profiles from the printer must be interfering somehow, but I'm a bit stumped how to fix it - they worked for a while so why that changed I have no idea. :(

(Fyi, latest video card drivers, no disk errors (new disk infact) and new user profiles - no changes)
