Lightroom: Will not display folder contents seemingly when there are several sub-folders

I have used Lightroom for several years but recently a problem has arisen. I have 60000 images in one catalog. I have several folders which have multiple levels of sub-folders. Although LR always used to display all the images within all the folders, it now will not display the images within some of the lower level folders. It does display the image count correctly and will usually display all the images in all sub-folders from the parent folder. It is not consistent in that it sometimes will display the images in one sub-folder but at other times it will not. The problem only seems to be where there are several levels of sub folders as everything else is fine. I have removed the Lrcat file and recreated it to no avail. I have Synchronized the folders also to no avail. Could the problem be to do with the number of images or the multiple levels of folders? Thanks!

Hi Paul. Remind us which LR version and OS you're using?

Hi
I am on LR 5.5 and Windows 10.
I have restructured some of the folders to reduce the number of levels, with no difference.
I also ran a LR backup with integrity checks and it did report some errors; I think I said to "ignore"; then when I ran it again, it didn't show any errors; the original problem is still there.
Thanks

Ok, try updating to 5.7.1 before we go any further.

You're welcome to zip up the catalog (just the lrcat bit) and use www.wetransfer.com to send it to me at uploads@lightroomqueen.com and I'll see if I can replicate the same problem here. If I can replicate it, I can run it past the database engineer to see if he can fix it.

I have zipped up the lrcat file and transferred it, along with a screen dump and explanation of where the error occurs. Many thanks for you help.

Got it. I'm missing the explanation of where the error occurs, but from your screenshot, I can see the image counts in the Folders panel are replaced by ...

Looking at your catalog, where should be 34 photos directly in the 01-Maritime/DPI/Gen photos and 11 photos inside the 1-2-3-HC images folder. Looking at your screenshot, it seems that they are all showing (unless I'm missing what you're trying to show me?)

Lightroom can be slow to update the folder counts, especially when there's a flat list of folders, because it has to go through and check each folder's still there. You might find that nesting all of the 2011 folders inside a parent 2011 folder (etc.) would help the folder counts update quicker.

There has also been an issue in the past with large smart collections slowing down counts. This is largely fixed in a recent 6.x build, but you might find deleting the Without Keywords smart collection from the Collections panel helps a bit.

The good news is I don't think there's any kind of corruption in your catalog, as everything's looking great here.

Hi! Unfortunately, I think you've missed the point! In the screenshot, the folder file counts do eventually display correctly but the images for the selected folder do not display.
HOWEVER, I took your advice and nested each year's photos in a parent folder for that year; then after running Synchronize for all folders, the problem immediately resolved itself! So, thanks very much for that suggestion! Brilliant.

Ah good. I'm still not completely clear on what I was meant to be seeing in the screenshot in that case, but if you're sorted, we're all happy!
