Lightroom Classic: Really slow on Dell XPS 15 9650

I have recently switched from a two years old MBP-2015 to a Dell XPS 9560. The current experience is that the Dell XPS 9560 (32GB version) is running much slower on windows, compared to lightroom classic on mac.

1. At the moment, should we expect LR classic to run better on Mac ?
2. The issue happen even if the GPU acceleration is set to on/off. (I notice the following on SystemInfo, despite having my Nvidia GPU used, is that normal: GPUDeviceEnabled: false).

To demonstrate how slow it is, here are the the same catalog being viewed on both the mac and Dell. Same slowliness happen when editing photos, resizing the software, etc.

I am in the same boat as well - my 2013 MBP 13 Retina runs LR much better than my 2017 XPS 15 that's pretty closed to maxed out. Quad core i7, 16GB Ram, PCIE SSD, NV graphics.

Check my new comment below, I think this can aswell be 1. An issue with LR on windows + 2. Bad pasting on Dell XPS laptop.

I am looking forward to hear from adobe on this.

What are the speeds of the cpus in the two laptops? The Dell has at least two different speeds; not sure about the Mac.

We are talking about I7-4980HQ 2.8Ghz(apple) vs I7-7700HQ 2.8Ghz(Dell Xps)

Note: both catalog are the same, they have the same settings. I have just bumped the cache on windows to 70GB. Ok looking further into this, I noticed that removing videos from the LR directory accelerated scrolling through album considerably on Windows 10 with this specific computer.

I wondering if this is due to CPU throttling. I noticed that with LR and/or premier pro on this Dell XPS, CPU usage would sometimes drop really quickly (even if it would be the only application running). See an example loading two images between the Dell XPS 15 and the MBP:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/nvmXYp9i1EDuD9WH2

EDIT: Digging more into this. After checking CPU utilisation, it appears that even simple action like going through photos or using the Treatment sliders increase the CPU usage to up to 80%. As result, I saw the temperature increasing up to 90C+, and throttling was happening. In worst cases, this led to seeing the CPU frequency decreased to 700Mhz.

On the contrary, Mac seems to cap at 35% of the CPU on similar actions (idle > 55% at all time)- Temperature remained fairly constant with no throttling at all.

This led me to think that:
1. Lightroom is using more ressources on Windows, even for simple actions. And it's affecting all CPU threads.
2. Dell did a bad job pasting the CPU of my machine, leading to higher CPU temperature.

I would love to hear from the adobe team on the CPU usage issue happening on Windows? Is this happening? Any resolution that we can try so far? Or is it an issue on LR not properly using the GPU acceleration?

Note: At that stage, LR is not usable on this Windows machine, I am seriously considering upgrading instead to a new Mac.

EDIT 2:
windows machine in running LR 7.2
mac is running LR 7.0

Try update the Mac to Lr 7.2 for an apple-to-apple comparison.

Interesting observation. It seems to be a thermo management issue where CPU clock got throttled way down due to inadequate cooling? Given you also observed the similar phenomenon in Premiere Pro.

Lr shares the same raw image processing code between macOS and Windows. Obviously there are difference in the compiler and the platform OS and the hardware.

Thanks for looking into this - That's my most likely cause at this stage.

Also make sure that your Nvidia card driver is set to "High Performance" mode. See https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/panning-lag-at-1-1-zoom-nvidia-gpu.html for instructions.

Hi, this help a little bit - but still - CPU usage was spiking. LR7.2 on mac was still much faster.

FYI, I am going to return this machine (second Dell return in a week). I noticed that the CPU would reach 100% after 5-10s of rendering video on Premiere, crashing windows. I think there is a serious problems on this laptop.

Hey Guys.. thanks for posting this. I am wondering if this was ever resolved, as I am looking at the Dell XPS 15 as we speak! I have read on the Adobe Premiere forums that when you have a integrated graphics card and a dedicated graphics card, you have to tell the program (Lightroom) that you are running to use the dedicated graphics card instead of the default integrated card.
