on lightroom 5 ( have installed 5.5 and 5.6 ) the preview cache would appear to be corrupted
previous forums have list going into lightroom to fix this error on startup the point is that lightroom doesn't start and therefore you are unable to change any settings

I have tried to search for the preview.lrdata file or the like without success

are you able to tell me where this file is so I can correct this scenario as I am unable to start lightroom

The preview cache is in the same folder as your catalog so you need to be able to find the catalog using the catalog settings are in LR.

The catalog folder location can be found by going to LR / Edit / (Preferences / )Catalog Settings and then clicking the Show button.

"your catalog" Previews.lrdata folder is in same folder as "your catalog".lrcat file (your Lightroom catalog file).

In my opinion, it's good to always know where your critical data files are stored (and where they've been backed up to..) - before you have problems such as this one, even if applications are trying to hide such information from you, as if it doesn't matter..

Anyway, I don't remember off-hand where the default location is, but probably somebody else does, I *think* it may be:

Windows: C:\Users\{you}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom
Mac: are you on Mac?

Anyway, one way to find out is to start Lightroom with the "Ctrl" key held down (Windows), not sure about Mac. Lightroom will show list of catalogs recently opened (full location path), before trying to load one.

PS - it's a good idea to state operating system when asking such questions - the answer depends on it..
