Lightroom Mobile sync problems on iOS 8

On iOS7 the mobile app allowed you to automatically sync images from the Camera Roll. I had this setup and working great on an iPhone and iPad, successfully syncing images from both devices to Lightroom on Mac.

But in iOS8 released this week Apple made significant changes to Photos and the Camera Roll no longer exists, now replaced with "Recently Added" and LR mobile now uses this new folder for “Camera Roll” sync.

The problem is "Recently Added" no longer contains just images from one device but also all new photo stream images (last 30 days?) from all other devices using the same Apple ID. Adding to the problem is these photostream images are not full resolution originals but appear to be device specific optimised copies.

So when syncing my iPhone / iPad the following happens:
* iPhone sync uploads all new original images taken on the phone plus low res copies of new photostream images from all other devices linked via my Apple ID.
* iPad sync uploads its new original images (low res copies already in LR catalog synced from iPhone "Recently Added" above), plus low res photostream copies of the same original images already synced from iPhone above.

The result is every LR Mobile synced image now appears twice in the LR desktop catalog (original from sync of each device plus low res photostream copy), and also unwanted low res photostream images from other devices using the same Apple ID.

I have been forced to discontunue syncing images directly from LR Mobile until this is fixed. Looks to me like some fundemental changes are needed in LR Mobile to handle iOS 8 changes?

I have been syncing my iPhone and iPad images to Lightroom long before Lr Mobile existed.

You do have to set up an Automator workflow but that is easy ... then set your Lightroom Desktop version to import from a watched folder. I use a folder on an external drive, where I store all my RAW images, thus giving me an extra backup copy of all cloud shared images.

It's very easy, you only have to set it up once ... and as long as Apple doesn't change where it saves the Photostream/iCloud photos on your desktop computer ... you shouldn't have any problems or face great difficulty in updating the process if there are future changes.

It seems to save out the full resolution images as captured by the devices.

I have updated both my iPhone and iPads to iOS 8 and everything works the same as it did under iOS 7. We'll have to wait and see if Yosemite changes anything when it is released next month.

I'm Having trouble syncing Lightroom mobile 1.2 with lightroom 5.6. It is stuck trying to upload 20 images from my camera roll in perpetuity. The images have reached the web version of lightroom mobile but not the desktop version. It is the collection that was setup to sync the camera roll.

I think it might be because I have updated both iOS (to 8) and LR mobile (to 1.2) at the same time but hadn't completely synced the collections yet. Now it seems stuck in limbo. Lightroom mobile keeps trying to sync.

I erased all my Lightroom data from the desktop version to try and reset it. The collections disappeared on lightroom mobile but it still tried to sync something. I had to uninstall the app and reinstall it for it to stop syncing.

Did you just trigger a "Delete all Data" via Lr Desktop? Are you still experiencing the problems.

If so could you please send out a Lr Mobile diagnostig log? The Lr Mobile app log can be triggered when you open up the settings and long press the to LR Icon a diagnostic log will be generated and attached to your local mail client.

Yes, I deleted all data in LR 5.6 and deleted the app and reinstalled on the iPhone. Signed out of both apps and signed back in.

Now working fine. New sync completes fine now.

Apologies, I didn't know about the log function. Would have been useful.

We've just figured out that with the iOS8 update Apple changed the file path in our database where we store image information. We will submit a fix shortly. In the meanwhile you have to delete Lr Mobile from your device and re-install the app to bypass this issue. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll let you know when the new version is available. - Guido

Thanks I figured it would be something like that. It just got stuck trying to sync the 20 iphone images from iOS 7 that hadn't been uploaded yet. It did look like it just couldn't find them.
Thanks for the quick fix.
I'll send a log next time!
