Lightroom Mobile – how are DNG’s managed? Are they replaced with Smart Previews once sync'd?

’ve been using the LRM camera’s HDR capability (and ordinary DNG capability) and enjoying it a lot, but am concerned that the large files (~40 MB each) will ultimately fill up my iPhone’s available storage. Can someone explain what the sequence is? I understand that when I take an HDR shot, the DNG and HDR DNG are sent up to the cloud, then sent down to a subfolder of the Lightroom folder on my Mac. Are the original DNG and HDR DNG files on my iPhone then automatically replaced with Smart Preview DNG’s, reducing the storage usage? If not, is there a way to make this happen? Also, at some point I’ll make a gallery with the images I want and sync it to my phone — is it the case that, if the DNG’s (or Smart Preview DNG’s) are still on my phone, no extra storage is used when I sync the gallery?

Lightroom automatically manages its storage, so it clears out old already-uploaded originals when it needs more space.

Tap the LR icon and disable "Use Full Resolution" in Preferences, then tap Clear Cache.

And yes, if you create collections etc. with the photos, they still take the same amount of space.

Thanks, Victoria -- that was quick!

Just to be sure I understand - if I don't disable "Load Full Resolution," are the original DNG's purged and replaced automatically when storage gets tight?  In general, I'm unclear about exactly what the "full resolution" toggle does.

Also - how does LRM decide how much storage it is allowed to use?

Thx again,

With "Use Full Resolution" checked, it'll download the full resolution (or keep the full res) if it's available (either in the LR cloud or in the Photos.app). With it unchecked, it'll swap out for the smart preview as soon as possible.

I'm not certain of the exact percentages used by LRM, but it doesn't let you run out of space on your device if it can purge stuff to help out.
