Lightroom makes photos into Tiff files when I try to edit in Photoshop

Whenever I try to import a photo from Lightroom to Photoshop for heavier edits, it opens it in a TIFF format and that causes all of the layer settings to not work, I cannot edit the photo

Being unable to edit photos could be caused by the known bug in the latest release in Photoshop - the workarounds are to open PS before LR or to disable the home screen is PS

It would be good to know if Adobe intend to allow PSDs to be opened in Photoshop as an alternative to TIFFs.  TIFFs take up a lot more disc space on my system.

So the baseline idea I have seen is that Regular Lightroom Classic opens my RAW files in photoshop and keeps them in RAW, they are able to take the edits and proceed with normal circumstances. When I do the same steps for Lightroom CC, it opens in a TIFF format, which begs the question, what are my files being imported as. I was under the impression it was RAW but this does not appear to be the case anymore. Looks like I will be sticking to Lightroom Classic.

No, this has nothing to do with opening in raw and keeping them in raw. Photoshop never does that and never did in the past. The file isn't raw because Photoshop can't edit a raw file directly. It always has to be converted to RGB first. What happens when you send a raw file from Lightroom Classic is that Photoshop converts the image to RGB, but because it has not yet been saved, you still see the raw extension in the file name. When you choose 'Save', you will see it saves as a tiff file.

The fact that you can't seem to edit the tiff file is a bug. See what Chris wrote about how to solve that problem.
