Lightroom Importing Duplicates

I have been using Lightroom for years - including CC. Despite ticking the "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates", it does!! I copy from a folder on another external hard drive to the folder of the same name on my main external hard drive to check that I have all the images. I have ended up with -2, -3 and sometimes even -4 copies at various times. Please assist. Thank you.

Did you previously or are you now using file renaming on Import of the image files.

If not the you may have a corrupted LR Preferences file. Follow the procedure at the below link to reset it:

I rename the files on import and have always done so.  I end up with -2, -3, -4 and even -2-2, -2-3 on my duplicated files.  It is so frustrating and tiresome to have to keep checking and removing duplicates.  Please help!  Thank you.
