Lightroom has no way to systematically change filenames for a group or folder full of files

I need Lightroom to be able to systematically rename a set of image files without breaking the connection to the files' Lightroom histories and adjustments. Once image files are exported from Lightroom I can use ACDSee17 or Breeze Systems Breezebrowser to rename files according to a template or by search and replace. But for organizing large, multiyear collections, that is a tedious and slow way to go.

I can't use those apps to change the original filenames because that breaks the connection to Lightroom settings and history, losing thousands of hours of work.

Since it's possible to change a single filename in Lightroom, it should be possible to implement a systematic search and replace as well as a template driven utility to change all selected files or all files in a folder, or all files that meet certain filter criteria.

I recommend making a feature request, instead of a bug report.

For the mean time, consider a plugin:

FileRenamer (free, by me)

PS - Make sure you read & follow instructions..

Unless you've missed identifying some very unusual aspects of your need, this is possible now.

1. You build your search using the Library Filter to create groups of files that meet your criteria.
2. Select All in Library Grid
3. Rename using Library - Rename and build a renaming template to suit.
repeat and modify as necessary.

Summary: Lightroom does support bulk renaming (Library menu - Rename Photos..), but does not support "search and replace" or some of the other things people would like to be able to do.

Key idea: Lightroom does support renaming based on metadata.

Note: file renaming plugins can NOT actually rename photos, so they set up metadata instead which YOU can use to rename photos in Lr (Library menu - Rename Photos..).

So, another "advanced" way to rename files without a plugin is to use an application program or utility to compute metadata, then read it into Lightroom (via Library - Read Metadata..), then rename photos based on the acquired metadata..
