Lightroom for multi-user organization

I'm working with a large organization which, like many other businesses an organizations has thousands of images that they need to organize, that can be accessed, edited etc by multiple users over a broad geographic area.

I know that a LR catalog cannot be stored on a shared drive. The latest post I find here about a network solution is 5 years old - is there anything more current anywhere?

Any suggestions within/outside of the Adobe realm for such an organization?

We use Extensis Portfolio in our organization.  It's server based, can be installed on either Mac or Windows, accessed via browser and shared across the organization with extensive admin oversight.  Cost will depend on the number of images you need to manage and if you need any image conversions via add on components. You can also create custom fields, auto synch folders, and various types of workflows.  Portfolio 2016 is the current version.

so appreciate your taking the time to share your process - thank you!

I too very much want Lightroom to become multi-user friendly, able to be hosted on a network drive/server for my in-house design team to share common stock and internal photography. It seems like a huge impediment to the easy ecosystem that Adobe has implemented with their CC products.
