Lightroom: Does face recognition have a maximum size in pixels that it can recognise?

I ask this because some portraits of people, face on, that nearly fill the frame are not recognised.

Yes. The thresholds are set in terms of measured in terms of relative minimum and maximum eye pupil distances with respect to the dimension of the long image edge. The general guide line sets the minimum eye pupil distance at 0.05; whereas the maximum at 0.8. Again, this is just a guideline and hint to the face detection engine. The face engine might do better or worse in these scenarios based on the specific situation. They are not hard thresholds.

How can you give hints to a face detection engine? It's not intelligent is it??
