I am unable to import photos from a catalog on another computer. I start with my main catalog on Computer #1.  I export a catalog with a sub-set of photos to use for a course.  The exported catalog is transferred to computer #2.  I do some editing on Computer #2.  I then try to merge the catalog on Computer #2 back into the main catalog on computer #1, using the 'import from another catalog' command.  However, the command fails to recognize that the images from the computer #2 catalog already exist in my main catalog.  It will only import the images as 'new photos'.
This is a problem since I should be able to get Virtual Copies of the new images.  Instead, they get placed in a location which is unrelated to their original location.
If I do this process but leave the new catalog on Computer #1, then the import command will correctly identify the new catalog as having images which already exist and offer to create virtual copies.
This is using LR Classic 7.3.1 running on Sierra and High SIerra on an iMac and MacBookPro computer

Not sure why this happens but why not simply copy the catalog back from computer #2 to #1 before you re-import?

That is what I did. Sorry my explanation wasn't clear.  If the editing is done on computer #2, I can't import properly.  If I do the editing on computer #1, I can import correctly.

In order to be considered a duplicate all of the following must apply:

1. Files have same file name
2. Files have the same date/time stamp
3. Files have the same physical size on disk.

If any of those vary, the Import from Catalog should consider them a separate file. Are you doing anything on Computer 2 that would change 1,2 or 3?
