Lightroom Classic: When panels are set to “Manual” and are closed, panel will open if the mouse crosses over during a drag-and-drop operation.

Per online help; “Lightroom Workspace Basics” the following is listed under “Set how panel groups show or hide automatically”:

Manual: Turns off automatic show/hide behavior.

Environment

  • Windows 10, version 1803 (OS Build 17134.590)
  • Lightroom Classic CC, Rel 8.2, Build 1204643

Steps to create:

  1. Set all panels to “Manual”.
  2. Close all panels.
  3. In grid view select a folder which contains a large number of photos.
  4. Select photo other than first.
  5. Initiate drag-and-drop to re-order photos.
  6. Simulate reordering photo to be first by moving mouse to left side of screen over closed panel.
  7. Panel will open overlaying the first column of photos.
    1. Panel will never close even after mouse moves off panel.
    2. Panel button remains in “click to open” mode.
    3. To recover:
      i.      Drag-drop operation must be cancelled.
ii.     Panel button must be clicked to finish open operation (grid re-sizes to accommodate panel)
iii.    Panel button must be clicked again to close panel.

I was able to replicate this behavior.  Looks like a bug to me.

This is probably a (not so well designed) feature, meant so you can drag & drop images to different folders or collections even when the panel is initially not visible. If you right-click on the panel edge, you can change the setting from 'Manual' to 'Auto Hide'. In that case the panel will automatically hide again when you move the images away from it.

This behavior is exhibited for ALL 4 panels including the right panel which never will accept a drag and drop operation. Therefore it is a bug and not a feature.
