Lightroom Classic: Soft Lock on moving collections/sets

I have encountered an issue with Classic several times wherein moving collections and/or collection sets appears to cause a soft lock. The application is not reported as 'Not Responding', yet nothing works, no commands are acted on, previews fail to display, etc. The only recourse is to force quit Lightroom Classic and relaunch.

There are a few methods to reproduce ---

Option One involves attempting to move a collection into a collection set with an existing collection of the same name inside:

    1. create a a collection set (test set)
    2. create a collection (name) inside the test catalog set
    3. create a collection (name) outside the test catalog set
    4. attempt to move the collection (name) into the test catalog set
    5. FAIL TO NOTICE the subtle UI feedback that indicates there is an issue with this action
    6. release the mouse button to initiate the move into the collection set (test set).
    • Lightroom fails to move the collection (I don't have an issue with this as it would be an issue if it overwrote an existing collection).
    • Lightroom begins to fail. previews won't load, no other actions may be taken.
    • Force quit and relaunch

Option Two is similar but herein the user recognizes there is a conflict and attempts to stop the move by releasing the mouse over the original collection.

    1. Follow steps 1-4 above
    2. NOTICE the subtle UI feedback that indicates there is an issue with this action or change your mind regarding the move. Perhaps you've not created the destination collection set (test set 2) and you do not want to move the collection into the incorrect collection set (test set). Release the mouse button while hovering over the original collection (name) that you intended to move.
    • Lightroom doesn't move the collection, which is as intended.
    • However, Lightroom begins to fail, previews won't load, no other actions may be taken
    • Force quit and relaunch.

As long as all my ducks are in a row and there are no issues or last second changes of intent, things work. Otherwise, I've had the entire program apparently cease function. This is on top of the apparent memory leak or whatever it is that results in a gradual slow-down of the application the longer it runs. For instance, merging two catalogs with a total combine image count of around 150,000 took the better part of 24 hours. Afterwards, every action took several seconds to register until I restarted Lightroom, at which point something like creating a new collection was virtually instantaneous.

The only apparent workaround I have encountered is to:

    • complete the move even if it is into an unintended collection set
    • correct whatever naming issue exists (rename the collection being moved, create a new destination collection set, remove/rename the existing collection causing the name conflict, etc.)
    • proceed with moving the collection to the desired location

Has anyone else encountered this? Does anyone have a solution aside from killing the task and restarting? The most recent soft lock of this nature halted an indexing task that had been running for over a day ( and was less than 50% complete... not looking forward to starting that over again).

Please copy the first ten lines from the menu command Help > System Info, which will tell Adobe precisely which versions of software you're running.

After the 5th step, Lightroom Classic ideally is not doing any job. So it shouldn't result in a non-responsive state.
What happens when you drag and drop a collection to a collection set the doesn't have a collection with the same name?

    Thanks,
    Sunil

I have been unable to reproduce this issue following the recent updates. I do not know if the update corrected it or if it was a result of unrelated issues. So, for now... resolved?

That's way better than: "Nope, still broke!"

As long as I do not have a collection with a conflicting name already in the set, the move happens without issue. When I have a name conflict (two collections  with the same name, two collection sets with the same name), then the move fails (as expected, though I'd prefer an option to merge them)... then Lightroom seems to stop functioning:

    • I can click on collections or sets and nothing previews, I get a perpetual 'loading' placeholder
    • I can try to rename the sets or collections, but nothing happens
    • Trying to quit Lightroom normally fails, leaving the only recourse to force quit.

Perhaps it is temporarily stuck in a loop that will clear up after some extreme patience, but it shouldn't hang for several minutes 'thinking' about the issue.

    EDIT:
This also seems to apply to moving a collection set into a collection set with a collection or collection set with the same name already inside
    • Portraits (collection set)
    •  - A (collection set)
    • - - - Aloha,Anne (collection set)
    • - - - - - 190101 (collection)
If I attempt to add by MOVING another collection or collection set named 'Aloha,Anne' to the 'A' collection set, then LR seems to get confused. I cannot CREATE a new collection or set with the same name in the 'A' set as LR blocks that in the dialog. If it is created outside the 'A' set and then moved into the set, the move fails and LR seems to soft-lock. On my system at least.

    Michael,
Are you saying the issue started appearing again after the update?
There were no related fix in Ligtroom Classic 8.4.

    Thanks,
    Sunil

Negative. The opposite. I have been unable to reproduce the issue, not that I tried too hard. I am behind on work and don't like force quitting Lightroom.

I do not know if the original issue was due to circumstances outside the application, or if there was a change with the update that resolved it. Either way, yesterday I was not able to reproduce the same behavior that I had encountered in the past.

If you ARE aware of a specific set of circumstances that causes the issue, and that is being addressed in a future update, then that is all for the better.

    Thanks!
