Lightroom Classic Slideshow Export Hangs

When I try to export a slideshow 720p or 1080p from LR Classic from my main catalogue the export hangs. But if I export from a seperate catalogue (containing one wedding) from either a separate mac or the same mac it works fine. 

I seem to have been having the same issue for a couple of years now and can't seem to find a fix for the main catalogue, which has meant me not doing slideshows for wedding clients during this time, which is a shame. 

Any thoughts?

It could be due to corruption in the LR Preferences file. The original Preferences file is carried over and updated on each LR upgrade so it could be the cause of your long-standing issue. Try resetting the LR Preferences file as outlined at the below link:

I have the same problem when I try to export a slide show!!
I am using last version of  classic CC 7.1 on IMAC High Sierra 10.13.2 
I have already reset the LR preferences, but no way.

After I rest mine it seemed to work, but then stopped working again, so annoying

It appears a previous bug when using Portrait and Landscape images with Option> Zoom to Fill Frame checked is back (or was never fixed). Try unchecking that option and then restarting LR.

Zoom to Fill Frame is never checked on mine, so it's not causing the issue, thank anyway

it's so frustrating as what should be a simple task is very flaky and unstable, with what seems like no help or support from Adobe. 

As a PROFESSIONAL photographer using PROFESSIONAL software I would expect better!!

One other thing to try. In the Library module select all of the image files to be used in the Slideshow. Go to menu Library> Previews> and select 'Build 1:1 Previews.' This fixed the issue with landscape and portrait images using 'Zoom to Fill Frame' checked so it may also fix your issue.

That is a long slideshow video! LR rendering video speeds are .5x to 2x. If your Slide Length + Crossfade is 7.5 sec. then your slideshow duration is 892 x 7.5 sec = 6,690 sec. = 111.5 min. = 1 hr. and 51.5 min. With a typical 1x processor rendering speed it's going to take about two hours or more to complete.

You need to select at least two (2) image files to create a LR Slideshow video. Please close all applications and shut down and restart your system. Open LR, select two image files, and then rebuild 1:1 Previews as I outlined in my previous post. Try again. If that works try with about 50 image files selected.

Each video is a 1h5m video with 8 music tracks. I use the fit to music option so it’s always the same length no matter how many photos we use. ‘Normally’ it does export quicker than the mamouth 3 hours or so it took last night.

As suggest I tried with 2 pictures with 1:1 preview but again it hung!

Try using the Adobe provide template named 'Simple' located in the 'Template Browser' panel on the left side of the screen. Do NOT change any of the settings.

Il you go in LR cache you will find all the created jpg, but after that the process dosn’t end...

Still three months later and adobe still don't bother to fix the issue. Who do I right to to see if they want to care or to find out if they are going to actually do something about the issue, or even just acknowledge it?

Come on Adobe. My loyalty is waining. Maybe I should just moved to Capture One as friend have recommended?

Close lightroom after it hangs. Open lightroom again. It will open up in the Slide show module. Press export video again. Now it works.... really weird issue. Does not matter if u have landscape or portrait.

I have spent the last 12 hours trying everything to export a slideshow. It used to be so easy....I am just about ready to try a sledge hammer. Please help!

I finally gave up and exported images only to Windows Media Player and made a slideshow that way... too bad. It's ridiculous that Lightroom is now a monthly subscription anyway and then 1/2 the time things don't even work. Can anyone out there recommend any other photo editing software? I'm ready to jump ship....

Hi, I just would like to add a contribution... for what is worth!
I just bought an iMac Pro and, aside the disappointment of the general speed and the headaches to activate/deactivate my Lightroom Classic CC v.8, I also incurred in the famous (or infamous) slideshow export.
I have tried several scenarios (only landscapes, adding portraits, removing stars, adding and removing "zoom and pan"...)  and I ended up finding that if the transition time was 2 seconds, the system was hanging, if I modified this (i.e. 1.9 sec or 2.1 sec) it worked flawlessly.
But I must add that on my NoteBook Pro (same OSX, same Lightroom Classic CC v.8, same catalog etc.) the export worked perfectly EVEN with the 2 sec transition time.
Now, the only REAL question is why Adobe is not fixing this bug (as Matt Boadle said)
Let's keep on searching...

The only solution I found was: 1. Make a copy of the presentation in LR. 2. Export photos from the presentation to jpg 3. Upload to the copy of the jpg photo presentation. 4. Convert to 1080p. This does not solve the problem in LR, but allows you to make a presentation.
The second solution is quite ridiculous: 1. Install the program to dump the image and sound from the screen in the form of a movie. 2. Start recording in the program to dump from the movie screen. 3. Turn on Play in the presentation in LR 4. After recording, set the beginning and end of the movie. The conversion of the presentation will take a dozen times less time than with normal conversion. Why is it so, I have no idea.

The first approach (exporting to JPEG) is the only one that has worked in my case. Absolutely exhausted of trying one and another fix. 

After making all the development process in your travel shots, the main point is to share your work with your family in a video. It's a shame that Adobe had not sort out such an old problem. Really discouraging.

This is still a bug in LR Classic 8.3.1. Apart from being unable to export slideshows with photos, it also can't export any slideshows involving MP4 videos in any of the 4 video formats offered (from lo res to 1080p), even if it's one short video (without any other videos or photos), despite being able to display these slideshows via the Preview, Quick Slideshow or Play buttons. At the moment, my workaround on macOS Mojave is to either:
  1. use iMovie to create a slideshow (which can take longer), or
  2. use Mojave's built-in screen recording feature (Shift-Cmd-5) to record the slideshow preview (so I don't have to insert captions etc in iMovie), and then import it into iMovie to add an audio track (if required).
Really, it's time for Adobe to sort out LR Slideshow module, no?..

I was having this problem.  I tried exporting with various settings and it kept getting hung up at the same spot.  I realized that some of my images were TIFFs, and the first one was about the spot where I got stuck.  I exported all the images as jpgs and reimported the jpgs into the slide show module.  I had no problem exporting the slide show once I did that.

I'm a big slideshow export user, and this problem only started happening recently after a few months away from the work.  Looks like I've got the same problem everyone here is reporting.  Now I have the added experience of having adobe support "fix" it, only to have wasted 2 hours, wiped my preferences, got a new install of lightroom, messed with my monitor settings, and treated me like I didn't know a thing about what I'm doing.  Terrible customer care on this.  

Adobe - I expect my subscription fee refund until you have fixed this.

Lightroom customer service was on the case for me and identified that my graphics card drivers didn't get a key update automatically, and my windows update had been paused because of an update that failed. Once I updated the graphics card drivers that solved the hang up.

Creating a slideshow in Lightroom never works. It hangs forever while displaying "Export Slideshow as Video" in the top left corner. Many users have reported this problem for YEARS:

Just experienced this a couple of times using version 9 (on Mojave). The symptom or clue was that after a long period of time the *.tmp file was not being created and the progress bar had only made it up to about the letter "r" in the English version under the Export Slideshow as Video label.

Used it solidly for a day and it was progressing as expected. Then after adding some more images (HEIC and some jpegs) it started to hang. Quit and Restarted 3 times and then it finally started working again.

The status information needs to be improved so it is clear what is going on. If there is a pre-roll processing step that makes up the time, then then drilling into the status should say that. Then it should really say processing image number XX of YY. Add some more feedback and quote how much has been written to disk. Be even more helpful and start to estimate the time that this will complete. Currently it just says exporting. If there really is an issue making it to the point of writing to disk - report that there is an error.

I suspect there is some engineering opportunity to speed this process up with some parallelisation. I don't see a lot of cores lighting up when slide show is being rendered.

I feel your pain!!! My hunch on processing is the prep step is the first 1/5th of the render progress bar, and its working one core, but I’ve noticed that once it actually starts writing to disk, all the cores light up and max out and the graphics card fans run high.


My only solve was getting the graphics card software update, but I wouldn’t be surprised if other issues might hang up the process. Love the idea of getting better status info and error messages when something goes wrong.
