Lightroom classic should have the capability of showing the slideshow as a photo essay with large paragraphs of text associated with each photo.  It should have a metadata field for each slide up to 2000 chars with full text editing and formatting capability. We should be able to record the story associated with each photo.

200 characters does seem an unusually severe limit. Not sure I would ever use formatting for this but a bigger limit I agree with. It may have to do with the IPTC specs...anyone know that info?

The OP is talking about the text overlays in slideshow. One can enter much longer in the caption.

In any case, these text overlays are not per image like captions.
