Lightroom Classic: Files damaged

I'm having a similar issue, the files are all destroyed no matter where they were saved.  And completely impossible to communicate with anyone at Adobe about this.  Like they could care less. If I subscribe to the cloud service, will that find my photos?  Can ask anyone, just have to pay and see what happens.  What a joke.

Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: Lightroom Classic destroys LRCAT file when rebuilding.

1) Lightroom 5.7- May appear to run on Catalina, however it is not possible to reinstall or uninstall. It is not recommended to upgrade to Catalina if you intend to stay on these older versions. You may need to revert to Mojave OS!

2) 'Red' is a clipping indicator- as answered by David G.

3) 'Grey thumbnails' are all 'missing' images showing the exclamation mark '!' on the frames. Lightroom has 'lost' the location of these photos. Causes include- Renaming files or folders, Deleting files, Hard-drives changing name. Re-building the Previews will not fix this! (or unknown effects of the Catalina upgrade!)

For the gray previews in the Library module

First consider  that your library preview files might be corrupt nd need to b recreated

see:

I've never seen clipping in those photos before, why did that suddenly happen?
Also, why is my library corrupted?  It was fine 2 weeks ago.

You probably hit the 'J' key, which toggles the Highlight and Shadow clipping indicators.

Also, why is my library corrupted?
The gray thumbnail with '!' symbol indicates the files are missing and not corrupted! You most likely moved files and/or folders from outside LR using Finder or Windows File Explorer. That causes LR to lose the link to where they are located. Don't do that! Only move files and folders from inside LR. As David Golding mentions use the below link for more information on to to fix this issue.

OK that button seems to have fixed that clipping problem. I upgraded to LR 9. Still a large swath of missing photos at the beginning of the catalog.  I'll read that article to see if I can fix that.

Hi. I just looked at that link and followed the instructions.  Found where one set of pictures should have been, but strangely were not.  Found the photos elsewhere.  Moved them into new appropriately named folders that corresponded to the names LR was looking for.  It worked for this set.  One thing: the entire set of photos of a college graduation weekend was taken over 3 days.  Each day had an existing folder on LR.  I moved all the photos into the first day's folder, but LR only recognized 3 of them.  I assume it was the 3 actually taken on that day.  Moved the rest into the next day's folder.  LR recognized 6 of them.  Moved the rest into the final third day.  All were recognized as being taken on that particular day.  You might take that into account in your instructions.  I'll move on to the next folders that have "?"s and hopefully this can be solved.
