Lightroom Classic: Causes my computer to restart with no warning

Hi all,

I am running Lightroom Classic CC on my desktop computer, whose details are below (from the lightroom system info window). It is a Windows 10, which is updated regularly using Windows update - but I have had this problem for a few months now so it is NOT the latest Windows update fault.
So - I kept on experiencing sudden computer restarts, with no alert, and no evidence in system logs or events. It happens only when Lightroom Classic CC is on, and more so when it is actually working (and not just open idle). 

So after reading a lot of posts etc, I updated my motherboard BIOS and the drivers for every piece of hardware I could find.

When it didn't help, I decided to get a new graphics driver (at first I had only the Intel Core built in one, now I have the Asus/GeForce one described below). Also - most updated driver. But I still get those restarts.

So I thought it might be related to the UPS unit the desktop is hooked to - but it is not. I ran it bypassing it but it still restarts when I work with Lightroom Classic CC.

I even tried to work after a fresh restart with nothing running - to no avail.

So I went ahead and uninstalled the entire Adobe suite, restarted and worked on the desktop for a day or two - no restart. Re-installed it - back to crashing.

What do I do now?!

I've checked the email you used in this forum and for Lightroom Classic (there is no CC btw...) 9.2 and 9.2.1 and find no crash reports under your Adobe ID. 

Have you ever received an Adobe Crash Dialog? If so, are you submitting the report with your email?

An OS Crash Dialog? 

To be honest, from the description, it sounds like a hardware failure. Lightroom stresses hardware more than most software does.  My money would be on RAM for starters. Overtemp on CPU would be my next bet. Have you investigated/tested those components?

No crash dialog of any type, and like I wrote - nothing in Windows logs or events. It just restarts with no warning.

And, my kids stress the computer with their games just as much...

I recommend doing some in-depth hardware testing.

Overheating is a common, if not the most common, cause of random restarts. I've had it happen when either a video card, case or power supply fan failed. Also happens if I don't periodically clean out the dust from the various heat sinks: video card, processor, power supply... 
Given the age of your system, estimated based on the age of your video card, my bet is on heat. 
My approach:
  • if the anything is overclocked, reset it/them to normal and retest 
  • if the problem still occurs, clean out all the dust and retest 
  • if the problem still occurs, pull the video card and just use the built in GPU of the processor, retest 
  • if the problem still occurs, while unlikely, see if there is dust behind the motherboard
  • if the problem still occurs then most likely, some hardware component in the power supply or on the motherboard has seen better days and it is time to replace at least the motherboard 
If you are up to your own repairs, this is the order I've used when repairing random restart problems. BTW, I've been dealing with these issues for over 30 years and have experienced this problem several times. Going from cheapest, replace fans one at a time. I recommend magnetic bearing fans, hard to find, expensive, last forever; otherwise ball bearing fans. Even if your fans are working, they are probably sleeve bearing fans which have a relatively short life. 
  • video card fans, because this is the most likely cause of your problem 
  • case fans, because they are usually easy 
  • processor fan, as it is critical when the processor is working hard, i.e. using Lightroom 
  • power supply fan, usually the most difficult 
Lastly, if your system is as old as indicated by the video card and it is in your budget; consider replacing your system. 6 years is a good life for a system.

You didn't read correctly, or something is not reporting well.
It's a Core i5 8400, about 1 year old, and the video card is just a week old, and I bought and installed it to try and over-rule a built-in GPU problem.
And - there's no dust, and all fans are working.
So, if anything else is failing, it might be a faulty memory if it is hardware. But I'm still far from sure...

Crash without log or event logged is most likely a hardware failure. My principal suspects would be the power supply or the processor itself.

Agree with what everybody else is saying.  Nobody likes to hear it, but the described behavior is almost always caused by hardware failure.

You could try HWinFO64 to get a good view of temps & load on your system without LR, then see what changes when you start LR

I ran memtest86 and found no memory issues - only that they two dimms are connected to dimm2a & dimm2b, so I opened my computer box again today, and moved them to dimm1a & dimm1b. I then let LR export a folder with ~350 images and it went by OK, while I was doing some face detection in parallel. Worked fine, so I guess maybe something was not connected OK.
