Lightroom CC2015 Unable to Open Zip Backups

I'm running LR CC2015 on my Mac with El Capitan 10.11.3 and I can backup my LR catalogue to a zip, but when I try to open the zip file it turns into a "lrcat.zip.cpgz" file. When I try to open that file it just duplicates itself. Why won't LR open the zip it created?

It sounds like you're running 2015.0 rather than one of the later releases (or were when the backups were created).  It's a bug in the Mac OS that can't handle zipped files over a certain size. Stuffit Expander can open those older ones, and later updates won't zip files that the OS can't open natively.

Victoria, the backup I'm trying to restore is something I just made today (I'm just trying to verify that the zipping actually doing things right), and according to Creative Cloud my LR is up-to-date. So Mac OS can't handle these zips without using a third party program?

In Lightroom, could you please go to Help menu > System Info to confirm which version you're running.  Sometimes the CC app reports incorrectly.

How big's your catalog (unzipped)?

It says it's running 10.11 [3], and the catalog  tried to back up is 7.88 GB

It's that top line - Lightroom version - that we're looking at.  That should say CC 2015.4 [1060496].  So the CC app is falsely reporting the update status.  That's good news, as it's easily fixed.

One solution is to uninstall and reinstall LR from within the CC app.  Alternatively, you could install this patch (Mac).
