I've just signed up with Lightroom creative cloud and having been thoroughly exasperated by the slowness decided I would abandon it and go back to LR5.
I tried to open the cc catalogue but get the message that the file is too new - What can I do?
I spent ages tidying up my files and now this is wasted?
If I upgrade to Lightroom 6 will this solve the problem

Are you double clicking on the catalog, or launching LR and going File-Open, then navigating to where the catog lives? I would think LR would then give you the choice to update the catalog.

Sorry, I misread your problem. Yes, the latest version of LR works fine for me on 10.2.2.

Caroline you have to open your original LR 5 catalog not the LR 6 catalog.
No buying and installing LR 6 won't help you. LR 6 and LR CC 2015 are exactly the same program. The difference comes from how you Sign In, the Adobe ID you use. If your Adobe ID is tied to a subscription plan it becomes LR CC. If your Adobe ID isn't tied to a subscription plan it becomes the 6 version and asks for a serial number.
In all honesty it isn't LR that is causing your problems. It is something to do with your Mac.

It would help us to diagnose your issue if you could give us an exact operation you are performing and how many seconds it takes.  That lets us compare your system's behavior to expected behavior and possibly find a configuration/driver issue that will speed you up.
