Lightroom Desktop: Not downloading original when editing?

I have synced all my photo's into the Creative Cloud and have setup an external HD where originals should be copied as backup. Now I'm trying to edit some photos without the external drive connected and I'm expecting LR to download the original from the cloud but it seems that LR uses the smart previews instead. Which look ugly on my 5K Mac. Any way to work around this?

When you reconnect the hard drive to the computer, does it show you have the original or does it show you the Smart Preview still?

With the drive connected it works as expected. But I only connect it at the office and don’t have it at home or on the road. I expected Lightroom to download it from the cloud but adobe seems to disagree :)

Does it show you have the original or does it show you the Smart Preview still?  Go to the info panel and see what it says there to determine which you are looking at.

It shows smart preview if drive isn't connected.

Can you give me some information about your hard drive?  How is it connected normally?   How do you disconnect it?

It's a pretty standard USB drive. But the drive works fine. The problem is I can't edit original RAW files when the drive is not available. The whole idea of using a cloud solution is that I always have access to all my pictures. The drive is just for backup or in case I'm offline

If you turn off the backup option in Preferences and then attempt to edit with the drive not attached does it still fail?

Yeah, I'm doing that now but then I don't have a backup anymore and then my Macbook's internal SSD will fill up over time.

That really didn't answer my question. If the option is turned off and you disconnect the drive "What happens?"

Nick,

Circling back to this. Are you still seeing this behavior? Are you on version 3.2 of the software?
