Lightroom CC (iPad): Enable saving and working from external hard drive

I mainly work on my iPad when I‘m on the road and often have no internet connection. Therefore, I‘d really like to have the opportunity to save my pictures on an external drive and being able to work on them in LR.
I can get the point of moving to a cloud-based solution (at least from a business standpoint), but in most cases when you're on a trip and got a ton of pictures to store and work on, the whole cloud-based workflow is simple not working. Not to mention the more-than-boring workflow to get them into LR classic for archiving purposes.

The problem is that iOS does not support this. It doesn’t even support attaching an external hard drive to the iPad.

WWDC is June 4th. Apple will announce new OS’s. I hope they open up access to attached devices!

Thanks for your answers. I already knew that one cannot use a wired external hard drive but how about wifi hard drives? Sorry I was to imprecise asking my question.

Same thing. You can connect certain drives, either through wifi or with the iPhone cable, but they only work with their own iOS app and have very limited functionality. Other apps (like Lightroom Mobile) won't see those drives and won't be able to use them.
